Microsoft disables Excel 4.0 macro support by default

Excel macros were a game changer when they were released, but over the past decade they have become better known as a vector for malware.

In July 2021, Microsoft released a new Excel Trust Center settings option to restrict the use of Excel 4.0 (XLM) macros. Now Microsoft says they have made this setting the default when opening Excel 4.0 (XLM) macros.

XLM is disabled by default in September fork version 16.0.14527.20000

  • Current channel build 2110 or later (first release in October)
  • Monthly Enterprise Channel Build 2110 or later (first released in December)
