A new supply chain report claims that LG’s display division is working hard to prepare to compete for OLED MacBook orders sometime around 2025. Previous reports said the company was also preparing for an OLED iPad display, which was expected to launch a year ago. LG 与三星竞争 2025 年左右 OLED MacBook 订单

There are many reports that Apple is working on launching OLED MacBooks, but it is unclear when they will launch

Background

Apple is using or expected to Four display technologies used.

  • IPS LCD with traditional backlight. This is still used on older Macs and cheaper iPhones.
  • IPS LCD with miniLED backlight. Apple switched to this feature for iPad Pro models and now uses it on the new MacBook Pro. It allows for deeper blacks and brighter whites and makes a stunning difference.
  • Organic light-emitting diodes. Apple first adopted the feature in the Apple Watch before bringing it to iPhones, starting with the iPhone X. Apple is not yet making this feature available on iPads or MacBooks, but it is expected to be available sometime between 2023-2026.
  • Micro light-emitting diodes. Despite the similar name to miniLED, this is a completely different technology. It's actually a more sophisticated version of OLED. It's brighter, more power efficient, and won't show burn-in. Apple's interest in microLEDs dates back to at least 2014, and while there have been some signs of progress, the technology is still in a very early stage of development. Like OLED, it's likely to appear on the Apple Watch first, followed by iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

Apple has been testing OLED screens for MacBooks. The company was said to have originally aimed to launch its first OLED MacBook in 2025, but some have since expressed doubts about that timeline.

OLED MacBook Orders

As with the first OLED iPhone, Samsung may be best positioned to win early OLED MacBook orders because of its strong technology lead in the display. The company already produces OLED laptop screens in two sizes, 14-inch and 16-inch.

LG hopes to win some of Apple’s business.

LG Display has been evaluating deposition processes for Gen 8.5 (2200x2500mm) OLED panels since December, TheElec has learned […]

LG Display is targeting its first OLED MacBook offers Gen 8.5 OLED panel for IT applications and is expected to be launched around 2025.

The Korean display panel maker plans to use its 6th generation OLED product line for two OLED sports iPads (12.9-inch and 11-inch), which are expected to launch earlier than the OLED MacBook.

Since the OLED panels used in the MacBook and iPad that will be launched after the first two OLED tablets will be larger, it is more economically advantageous for LG Display to use larger substrates (such as Gen 8.5). Because more panel substrates can be cut each time while taking less time.

LG Display’s evaluation is expected to take about a year to complete.
