Apple has updated its iPhone SE to a new generation, with the entry-level smartphone now boasting 5G connectivity, but is Apple doing enough to encourage people to upgrade to the new model?

iPhone SE has always been the gateway to iPhone ownership. One that offers consumers a compact smartphone that has most of the modern conveniences of a flagship, but at a price that's very value-focused.

With the third-generation model Apple launched on March 8, the company is continuing its tradition of being an entry-level device of sorts. This time, it's a way for people to upgrade to 5G cheaply.

In addition to upgraded connectivity, Apple has also made the usual slew of upgrades to the interior. This could make the new iPhone SE a good choice for owners of older models, as well as potential switchers.

Here’s how the 2020 and 2022 iPhone SEs stack up.

The iPhone 13 mini holds that spot by a fraction of an inch, but the iPhone SE isn't too far off. The Gen 2 model is 5.45 inches tall, 2.65 inches wide, and also 0.29 inches thick. As for its weight, it tips the scales at a respectable 5.22 ounces. The second-generation SE’s design reuses design cues from the iPhone 8, rather than incorporating design ideas you’d see from flagship versions like the iPhone 13. This includes thicker bezels as well as the top and bottom, since it doesn't use an edge-to-edge screen. Apple has retained the same device design for the third-generation model, with no obvious external changes. Both models have a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera with f/1.8 aperture, optical image stabilization, 5x digital zoom, and True Tone flash. The only difference here stems from Apple's switch to the A15, which brings improved image signal processing. You don't get anything new from the outside at all, all the fundamental changes happen on the inside. It certainly makes sense for Apple to do this for the iPhone SE, as it saves money on not redesigning something that already works. For what it's worth changing, they are relatively minor. The switch from the A13 to the A15 will no doubt be popular with power users of the app, while the image processing upgrade enables computational photography on the model. The highlights of the 5G iPhone SE are technically correct, but far from the high-speed visuals many expected. Yes, it does get you onto 5G networks, but you won't see any real benefits here other than signal support. Lack of MagSafe can be a missed opportunity. But then again, how many people buying the cheapest iPhone in the range will care about getting MagSafe accessories to go with it? It’s hard to recommend the third-generation iPhone SE as an upgrade for second-generation users. There are some changes, but unless you want basic 5G connectivity, faster processing, and computational photo adjustments, it's not worth the switch. While it’s not a massive upgrade from the second-generation version, the third-generation keeps the iPhone SE updated and relevant to the entry-level iPhones on the list. This is especially true for those upgrading from a very old iPhone or temporarily switching from Android. For iPhone SE, this is not a sea change. It just keeps things modern enough to be useful.
