Qualcomm has found a way to support lossless audio through Bluetooth headphones - could Apple be next?
Ever since Apple introduced lossless audio to Apple Music, the bandwidth limitations of Bluetooth technology have become very apparent. However, as the world moves toward a future of wireless headphones, companies have been working hard to deliver lossless audio over wireless connections — and that's exactly what Qualcomm just announced.
The semiconductor company this week launched two new chips for wireless headphones capable of delivering lossless audio over Bluetooth. Qualcomm's new chips, dubbed "S3" and "S5," combine Bluetooth 5.3 technology with a new aptX Adaptive-based audio codec to transmit higher bitrates for lossless audio.
Devices with the new chip will support full regular lossless quality (also known as CD quality) and some high-resolution audio (usually requiring a digital-to-analog converter).
Unfortunately, Apple won’t benefit from this new Qualcomm technology because it also requires a smartphone or tablet equipped with a Qualcomm chip. But will Apple be next to launch its own Bluetooth lossless audio technology?
When Apple launched the AirPods Max, the company was criticized for not offering lossless audio support for its premium headphones.
Luckily, it seems the company still wants to bring lossless to AirPods in the future. Back in December 2021, Apple Vice President of Acoustics Gary Geaves complained about the limitations of Bluetooth in an interview, while also saying that the company wanted a technology with "more bandwidth."
The next generation of AirPods Pro is expected to offer lossless support. This suggests that Apple has also been working on new technology for streaming audio at higher bitrates over Bluetooth. That seems entirely possible as the company continues to promote lossless music as a key feature of Apple Music.
Wired headphones are still the best option for listening to lossless audio, but having Bluetooth headphones that are also capable of playing higher-quality songs will definitely make these accessories more attractive to audiophiles.
