How to show more or fewer recent apps in your Mac's Dock

In macOS, a convenience option called "Show recent apps in the Dock" (located in System Settings -> Desktop & Dock) adds a separator to the right of the Mac's Dock line and it will display all your recently used apps t permanently docked.

By default, this option only displays the three most recently used apps that were recently closed. However, there is a way to make it show more, which can be useful if your workflow involves using a lot of apps continuously.

If you're willing to paste the command into the Terminal, you can definitely increase or decrease the number of recently opened applications shown in the Dock.

Open a terminal window (the application can be found in /Applications/Utilities/) and paste the following into the command prompt and press Enter key:

defaults write com.apple.dock show-recents -bool true;
defaults write com.apple.dock show-recent-count -int 10;
killall Dock

Note that the -int parameter defines the number of recently opened applications you want to display after the separator in the Dock (in this case 10). You can change the number if needed, and you can resume showing the three applications at any time by using -int 3 in the second command.
