iPhone 13 users are increasingly complaining about the lack of noise cancellation on phone calls via accessibility settings available on all previous iPhones, but not newer iPhones. Now, what we thought might just be a bug was actually Apple removing the feature.

One of our readers, Steve, shared his conversation with Apple Support with us on Twitter. According to him, "After months of working with Apple and a senior consultant saying to wait for an update to fix this issue, I got an update on the issue and apparently, it was not going to be fixed and noise reduction was intentionally disabled. The cause of these devices is unknown."

We have an update on this. iPhone 13 models don’t offer noise cancellation for calls, which is why you don’t see this option in Settings.

After asking whether the iPhone 13 series does not support call noise reduction, the Apple Support team responded:

That’s correct. not support. If you would like to leave feedback about this feature, please feel free to visit: apple.com/feedback.

Apple 支持表示 iPhone 13 型号不支持以前 iPhone 中的降噪功能

#For those who don’t know, a month ago a Reddit user asked about the iPhone 13’s phone noise cancellation feature as it was on the accessibility page unavailable. Another user then pointed to an Apple forum discussion from October.

I can’t find the switch to turn off [noise] cancellation on my iPhone 13 Pro Max. Has this been moved or deleted? When I use FaceTime and talk through speakerphone, my voice cuts out.

Then, at the time, an Apple community expert pointed to an article that helped users adjust audio settings on their iPhone. The problem is that iPhone 13 users can't find this specific feature:

  • Phone Noise Cancellation: Turns on to reduce ambient background noise during calls when you hold the receiver to your ear.

Another user dagocarlito posted that Apple is aware of the issue:

The iPhone 13 "never" had this option in iOS 15 because this is a Glitch. I've been discussing this with Apple support. This is a known issue they are working on and there is currently no timetable for a resolution. This issue also creates echo issues on CarPlay when calling between iPhone 13s. This is a major flaw that needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

Now, finally, we know that Apple doesn't intend to fix this problem because the company decided that removing the feature wasn't a problem after all.

It’s unclear why the company decided to remove this feature and why it doesn’t plan to add it back. As you can see in the featured image above, on the left is my iPhone XS with this feature, and on the right is my iPhone 13 Pro without phone noise cancellation.

As of now, the only workaround available is to activate the Voice Isolation feature on calls in the Control Center.
