Back in October 2021, Android apps on Windows 11 finally made their way to Windows Insiders. After months of testing, they're also available as a preview of the operating system, but today only in the United States, Microsoft announced that it will be expanding the program to more countries.
Now, Windows 11 users in five more countries will be able to use the Android app. These include France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom. While Microsoft didn't outline a specific timeline, it noted that this should happen before the end of the year. The company also noted that the Amazon Appstore preview will continue to grow monthly. However, if you're waiting for official support from Google Play, you'll have to wait a little longer — or possibly forever.
#The Redmond tech giant highlighted the early success of its Microsoft Store, too. During the first quarter of calendar year 2022, the number of new desktop apps and games on the store increased by 50% compared to the same period last year.
Microsoft also announced new ways to increase app discoverability in Windows 11. The first method is for Windows Search to display search results from the Microsoft Store and install apps directly from it. With more than 50% of people using Start "regularly," the company is banking on this to become the primary acquisition channel for the app.
#Microsoft is testing the ability to restore apps across Windows devices for seamless transitions between PCs. Both features will be available to Windows Insiders soon.
#Meanwhile, developers can now take advantage of pop-up stores and app badges to make their apps more prominent on the site. In the coming months, they will also be able to run advertising campaigns in the Microsoft Store through a new product called Microsoft Store Ads. The events will be contextualised, and currently, interested parties can sign up for a waiting list.
Additionally, the waitlist for publishing Win32 apps to the storefront no longer exists. Any developer can now publish their Win32 packages to the Microsoft Store and take advantage of new features such as automated commits via CI/CD GitHub Actions or Rest API pipelines, test application visibility, view application telemetry, and respond directly to user comments.
Finally, developers of Progressive Web Apps (PWA) can take advantage of the following features:
- PWA Starter: This feature helps developers People guide their PWA development with tutorials on improving performance, integration with host operating systems, and providing a great user experience.
- PWA Studio: This is a new Visual Studio Code extension to help build, package, and publish PWAs to the Microsoft Store without leaving Visual Studio Code.
- Meta Quest Support: Already supported on PWAHoloLens devices in the Microsoft Store, Meta recently announced support for PWAs on its VR devices. Microsoft and Meta have partnered to make PWABuilder the ultimate tool for packaging PWAs for virtual and mixed reality, enabling developers to sideload packages for Meta Quest and HoloLens.
Microsoft emphasized that it will continue to make its store a better place for consumers and developers in the future.
