The taskbar has been an important part of Windows since Windows 95, and it has fundamentally changed with Windows 11. In Windows 11, the taskbar has been rebuilt from the ground up and is missing some very useful features, such as moving the taskbar to the top, left, or right of the screen, and drag and drop.

Also, Windows 11’s taskbar responds too slowly when you boot the device. Fixed apps or icons may not load immediately, possibly due to new animations and WinUI integration.

The taskbar on Windows 11 has an obvious design bug where icons take 2-3 seconds to load, sometimes even 5 seconds, and even slower on older hardware. Thankfully, Microsoft is aware of the potential performance issues with the taskbar and is working on a new feature that will synchronize the taskbar with Immersive Shell.

So the taskbar becomes faster when you start the device, restart explorer.exe (taskbar) and pin/delete apps. Microsoft is effectively making the taskbar faster while still delivering the smooth animations promised.

It’s worth noting that this effort is still in an experimental phase, but Microsoft may identify and fix other areas of the taskbar that typically load slowly “in the future.” This process will take some time, and the Windows Taskbar team is working with other parts of Microsoft on the design to ensure a consistent experience.

Additional Taskbar Improvements

As you may already know, the next update for Windows 11, "version 22H2", will restore drag-and-drop support to the taskbar. In addition to these quality improvements, Microsoft is also working on several bug fixes for the operating system.

In one of the latest preview builds, Microsoft has fixed several taskbar glitches. For example, the company fixed an issue where the upcoming overflow popup would unexpectedly appear on the other side of the screen. Fixed a bug that incorrectly displayed the taskbar animation for tablet-to-desktop transitions when logging in.

The company also fixed an issue that caused File Explorer to crash when the app tried to determine whether the taskbar overflow menu was open.
