HomeCommon ProblemWindows 11 Insiders now have optimizations for legacy games running in windowed mode

If you play older games on a Windows machine, you'll be happy to know that Microsoft has certain optimizations planned for them, especially if you run them in windowed mode. The company announced that insiders who recently developed channel builds can now take advantage of the features. Essentially, many older games use the "legacy-blt" presentation model to render frames on your monitor. While DirectX 12 (DX12) already takes advantage of a new presentation mode called "Flip Model," Microsoft is now rolling out this enhancement to DX10 and DX11 games as well. The migration will improve latency and will also open the door to further enhancements like Auto HDR and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). This change primarily affects older DX10 and DX11 games running in windowed and borderless window modes. Modern games using DX12 are already benefiting from this. That said, Microsoft warns: When your game is configured not to use vertical sync, this may result in a new frame being prepared before the previous frame is displayed. At high frame rates, turning this feature on may cause screen tearing. To avoid game tearing, you can make sure your game's frame rate is configured to match your monitor's display refresh rate. Another option is to turn on vertical sync in the game, which can usually be found in the game settings. If none of these options work for your gaming experience, you can opt out of this feature, instructions on how to do this are provided below. Another way to deal with tearing is to use a VRR monitor, which can take advantage of lower latency. However, be aware that tearing may still occur if you exceed your monitor's refresh rate. Microsoft says the feature is available on Windows 11 Dev Channel build 22545 or later, meaning users on build 22557, which just rolled out yesterday, can take advantage of it. You can visit the Microsoft blog post here to learn how to enable optimization globally or for a specific app. It's unclear when or if these optimizations will roll out generally on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
