Apple this week expanded its Apple Silicon lineup with new M2 Pro and M2 Max processors, building on the M2 chip released in June. The new M2 chip series represents the second generation of Apple chips now found in the latest Macs.
M2 Pro and M2 Max are significant upgrades from the M1 Pro and M1 Max, bringing even more performance, battery life and features to professional users. Below, we've listed the five most important details you need to know about Apple's latest Mac chips.
-
MASSIVE MEMORY BANDWIDTH: The new M2 Pro and M2 Max chips feature the same memory bandwidth as their respective predecessors, which is the highest in the industry. Like the M1 Pro, the M2 Pro chip supports up to 200GB/s of memory bandwidth, while the M2 Max supports 400GB/s of memory bandwidth like the M1 Max.
- ##LONGER BATTERY LIFE: The M1 Pro and M1 Max feature two efficient cores, while the M2 Pro and M2 Max both feature four Two high-efficiency cores enable the new Mac to use less energy to handle heavy workloads, extending battery life.
More transistors- : Thanks to the use of second-generation 5nm process technology, M2 Pro has 40 billion transistors, 20% more than M1 Pro. For the M2 Max, the jump is even bigger—its 67 billion transistors are 10 billion more than the number used in the M1 Max.
Highest unified memory yet for MacBook Pro- : 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with high-end M2 Max processors now support up to 96GB of unified memory. The 96GB memory option costs an extra $800, while the higher-end M2 Max chip costs an extra $200.
Connect More Displays- : 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro and Mac mini models with M2 Pro support up to two external monitors. The M2 Pro supports two 6K displays over Thunderbolt, or one 60Hz 6K display over Thunderbolt and one 144Hz 4K display over HDMI. MacBook Pro models with M2 Max support up to four displays: three displays at 6K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt and another 4K display at 144Hz over HDMI. The M2 Max also supports two 6K displays at 60Hz via Thunderbolt, one 8K display at 60Hz or a 4K display at 240Hz via HDMI.
The new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros are available in M2 Pro and M2 Max, while the newer Mac mini is available in M2 or M2 Pro. The new MacBook Pro and Mac mini are both available for pre-order on Apple's website and will begin shipping to customers on Tuesday, January 24.
