The world can't stop talking about Windows 11 as it continues to be released on millions of new devices around the world. Windows 11 has received mixed reviews, with some users criticizing the "visual refresh" of the Start menu and taskbar. On the other hand, some users are satisfied with the modern makeover of the operating system.
While Windows 11 remains the focus, and Windows 12 is now on the way, Microsoft has some good news for those who plan to stick with Windows 10. Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 10 will remain supported until at least 2025, with some form of extended support also coming after the deadline.
Windows 10 continues to play an important role, and Windows 10 22H2 will begin rolling out to customers later this year, according to Microsoft officials. A company spokesperson said the feature update will come with "a range of new features" and more details will be shared soon.
With nearly 1 billion Windows 10 users, Windows 10 22H2 isn’t a shock as Microsoft wants to continue maintaining the software for years to come. This is apparently good enough news that Microsoft felt it necessary to document the existence of version 22H2.
In a new support document, Microsoft confirms that version 22H2 is built on top of Windows 10 version 2004 and that it will not bring any changes to the Windows Hardware Compatibility Program (WHCP).
In other words, existing versions of Windows Hardware Lab Kit (Windows HLK) will continue to work on this new feature update. There will be no new Windows HLK version for version 22H2, partners can continue to use the existing version 2004 HLK for certification.
Similarly, Microsoft says existing drivers will continue to work properly after installing version 22H2. "Drivers that meet all applicable Windows 10 version 2004 requirements will be digitally signed," Microsoft noted.
A reference to Windows 10 22H2 was recently discovered in one of the cumulative updates (KB5015684). The update is now officially available to Windows Insiders and switches the operating system version from 21H2 to 22H2.
Microsoft is sticking to the same naming convention, so this update can launch as the "October 2022 Update" or the "November 2022 Update."
Version 22H2/Build 19046 will be enabled via the same "enablement package" format, meaning that the features launched with the update are already part of the optional functionality, but they are hidden from the public.
Windows 11, on the other hand, will get its first major feature called Sun Valley 2, or "version 22H2," which includes several new features and quality improvements. For example, this update adds support for taskbar drag and drop, Task Manager’s dark mode, and more.
