PHP is a server-side scripting language that can be embedded into HTML and used to create dynamic websites and web applications. In order to run PHP scripts on a Linux server, you need to install a PHP interpreter. Here is a method to install PHP through php-fpm.
What is php-fpm?
PHP-FPM, the full name is PHP FastCGI Process Manager, is an enhanced version of PHP (version 5.3.3 and above) FastCGI Process Manager. It can provide more management functions, including modifying operating parameters while the program is running, dynamically supplementing worker processes, etc. Compared with the conventional mode of using php-cgi, php-fpm is more flexible, supports more operating modes, and is suitable for high-load websites.
Installation steps
Before installation, make sure the system is updated. Then, update all current packages using the following command:
sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade
Next, install php-fpm and its related extensions, PHP -MySQL and PHP-GD. Enter the following command in the terminal:
sudo apt install php-fpm php-mysql php-gd
In Ubuntu, php-fpm has been started after the installation is completed. Now, we need to configure it a little bit. First, open the "/etc/php/7.x/fpm/pool.d/www.conf" file (x is the PHP version you installed, 7.2, 7.3, etc.). You can use the nano or vim editor to open it, as follows:
sudo nano /etc/php/7.x/fpm/pool.d/www.conf
We need to make the following modifications:
Find the following two lines and uncomment them, that is, delete the preceding semicolon:
listen.owner = www-data listen.group = www-data
Then, find the following two lines and change the user and user group to the names used by the Nginx server, as follows:
user = nginx group = nginx
Next, find the following two lines and change "dynamic" in them for "ondemand":
pm = ondemand pm.max_children = 5
Finally, save the file and exit.
Now, start the php-fpm service and set it to start automatically:
sudo systemctl start php7.x-fpm sudo systemctl enable php7.x-fpm
Replace " in the above command x" is your PHP version.
You can test whether php-fpm is working properly by creating a PHP script containing the following code:
<?php phpinfo(); ?>
This Place the file in the "/var/www/html" directory and access the file through a browser to view PHP information.
Summary
php-fpm is a powerful PHP FastCGI process manager that provides greater flexibility and scalability on high-load websites. If your server is running Nginx or Apache web server, you can install and configure php-fpm via the above method.
