Apple’s highly anticipated universal controls for iPad and Mac are now available for Mac and iPad users. As we detailed in our hands-on coverage, the feature is impressive but not available on all iPad and Mac devices. Head below for complete details on Universal Control device compatibility.

Universal Control Supported Devices

This feature allows you to use a single keyboard, mouse, and trackpad across multiple Macs and iPads. It's an incredibly impressive piece of technology, the same one Apple first showed off at WWDC last summer.

So which Mac and iPad models are compatible with the fancy Universal Control feature?

Apple says the following Macs support Universal Control:

  • MacBook Pro (2016 and newer)
  • MacBook (2016 and newer) )
  • MacBook Air (2018 and later)
  • iMac (2017 and later)
  • iMac (5K Retina 27-inch, Late 2015)
  • iMac Pro
  • Mac mini (2018 and later)
  • Mac Pro (2019)

As for iPad compatibility, this is Apple Said:

  • iPad Pro
  • iPad Air (3rd generation and later)
  • iPad (6th generation and later)
  • iPad mini (5th generation and later)

If your device meets the hardware requirements, Apple says that both devices must use the same Apple ID to log in to iCloud and Handoff must be turned on. And devices must be within 10 meters (30 feet) of each other. Apple also notes that iPads and Macs "may not share cellular and Internet connections."

Of course, all devices involved in a Universal Control setup must be running the latest iPadOS 15.4 and macOS 12.3 betas, which are available to both public beta testers and developers.
