Switch between accounts in Microsoft 365 web apps without signing out

We reported that Microsoft is developing a feature that will allow customers to easily switch between different accounts when using Microsoft 365 web applications, such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, OneDrive, Outlook, and more. Today, the company announced that the feature has begun rolling out and will be available to everyone in the coming months.

Previously, users had to log out of the Microsoft 365 web app and then log into another app, which was an outdated experience if you were using a work account and a personal account in the same browser. Multi-factor authentication at every login also further hinders overall productivity and workflow.

This is no longer the case as seamless account switching has begun rolling out. You simply click on the account switcher in the upper right corner of the Microsoft 365 web app and choose between other accounts you've previously signed into the service. The switch should be seamless, you don't have to log out of your current account and then log in again to another account.

There is an important caveat to know. Each application can only be active on one account. So, for example, if you have two browser tabs open in the same instance, and Word is logged into your work account, and then you switch one of the tabs to your personal account, you'll also need to use your personal Account refreshes another tab. Therefore, you cannot have two accounts with different Microsoft active applications running in the same browser instance.

For now, seamless account switching for Microsoft 365 web apps is rolling out to Office.com, Word, Excel, PowerPoint on the web, Outlook on the web, OneDrive on the web, SharePoint, and Microsoft 365 Management Member of the Global Environment Center. The company is working on expanding it to more services, but the rollout of the current range is expected to be completed in June.

This feature is not available for Microsoft365 via 21Vianet, Microsoft Operations 365 Government and German Cloud environments. There are no administrator controls to turn off the feature, but Microsoft has assured IT administrators that data integrity and privacy will be maintained.
