Apple adds automation features to Shortcuts, updates iWork for Mac

What we thought was just a minor update to the iWork suite actually brings an important feature to macOS Monterey users. Shortcut automation is now available in Pages, Numbers, and Keynote in version 12.0. Here's everything you need to know.

As discovered by developer Matthew Cassinelli, Apple is adding shortcut support to these Mac apps. According to him, all three iWork apps now have Open and Create actions. Here is a complete list of them:

First announced during WWDC 2021 last year, the Shortcuts app on Mac is the latest addition to macOS Monterey alongside Universal Control One of the important functions.

In an interview with Relay FM’s Mac Power Users podcast last June, Apple’s Vivek Bhardwaj spoke in more depth about Shortcuts on the Mac:

"We've been working on this for a while. When we first released Shortcuts, bringing it to iPhone and iPad was so powerful that it was a great opportunity for all of us to Getting some great feedback. These are devices that you carry around with you, and automation on these platforms didn't really exist before Shortcuts. So it was a great opportunity to test it out, get it out there and talk to the developers ecosystem and getting them excited about all the different different shortcuts they can build. I think we learned a lot and we got a lot of feedback , we are now building on this very, very strong foundation. So we think now is the right time to really bring Shortcuts to the Mac."

These new actions are important for Shortcuts for Mac and the automation ecosystem on Apple’s desktop computing platform — actions that were sorely missing from the macOS Monterey release , and is a first-party move that represents how Apple views Shortcuts.
