Research’s ranking of the best scientists in computer science has been updated to the 9th edition.

This ranking reviewed various academic indicators of more than 14,400 scientists around the world and selected the top 1,000 top scientists. The ranking is based on data integrated from various data sources including OpenAlex and CrossRef.

The bibliometric data used to evaluate citation-based metrics were collected on December 21, 2022. Position in the rankings is based on the scholar's D-index (subject H-index), which only takes into account publication and citation indicators in the discipline being reviewed.

Chinese scholars occupy three positions among the world’s top 20.

Among them, Jiawei Han is the only Chinese computer scientist to enter the world's TOP5. His D-index is 186, he has published 1,177 papers, and the number of citations is 209,445.

He is a professor of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a fellow of IEEE and ACM. In 2009, he won the McDowell Award, which is the highest technology award issued by IEEE.

In the field of data mining, Professor Han Jiawei believes that in order to turn existing unstructured big data into useful knowledge, the first thing to do is to structure the data, because of his outstanding contribution And was dubbed "the leader in data mining".

In addition, Philip S. Yu and Thomas S. Huang are both computer scientists who have entered the TOP20.

The 6th edition of 2020 ranking mentioned that in order to commemorate Professor Huang (Thomas S. Huang) who passed away on April 25, 2020, he mainly studied computer vision and pattern recognition during his lifetime. and multimedia and other fields.

Professor Huang is ranked 7th in the world and 5th in the United States.

Ranking Method

Research scientist rankings were first launched in 2014. The inclusion criteria are based on scientists’ subject H-index (D-index), that is, their performance in a specific discipline. Contribution percentages, as well as rewards and achievements in specific areas.

What is D index? The D-index is used to rank scholars in descending order, combined with the total number of citations.

H index (D-index) is an indicative indicator that reflects the number of influential documents written by scientists. It is calculated based on the number h of papers that have received at least h citations.

Research uses H-index and citation data from various measurement data sources. The subject H-index (D-index) is calculated by considering only publications considered to belong to the examined subject and their citation values.

The approval criteria for inclusion of scholars in the ranking of top scholars are based on the D-index, the proportion of contributions within a specific discipline, and the scientists’ awards and achievements.

The D-index threshold for listing leading scholars is set based on assessing the total number of scientists in each scientific field, in increments of 10, while ensuring that the top 1% of leading researchers are included are included in the ranking.

The D-index threshold for inclusion is set at 30 if the majority of a researcher’s publications are in the field of computer science.

The general proximity between a researcher's H-index and D-index should be 30% or less.
