Global PC shipments decline, Mac shipments rise in Q1 2022
Apple’s global Mac shipments will increase slightly in the first quarter of 2022, according to new PC shipment estimates shared by Gartner this afternoon. Apple shipped an estimated 7 million Mac units in the quarter, up from 6.5 million units in the same period last year, a growth rate of 8.6%.
Lenovo continued to be the No. 1 PC vendor in the first quarter of 2022, shipping 18.3 million units, but shipments fell 12.6%. Second-ranked vendor HP declined 17.8%, with PC shipments of 15.9 million units. Dell ranked third with 13.7 million PC shipments and a growth rate of 5%, while Asus and Acer ranked fifth and sixth respectively.
Overall, PC shipments in the first quarter of 2022 were 77.5 million units, an increase from the first quarter of 2021 of 83.6 million units, a decrease of 7.3%. Overall PC shipments were affected by declining Chromebook sales in the education market, Gartner said.
In the United States, Apple ranked fourth with 2.8 million Mac shipments, up from 2.3 million units in the same period last year, a growth rate of 18.6%. Apple’s U.S. market share was 14.5%, up from 10.2% a year earlier.
Apple has had success with M1-based Macs, most recently launching M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBook Pro models in October 2021, and M1 Max and M1 Ultra Mac Studio models in March. Apple is about to convert its entire Mac lineup to Apple silicon-powered machines, with only the Mac mini and Mac Pro continuing to use Intel chips.
IDC released its own shipment estimates this morning, noting similar growth for Apple. Apple shipped an estimated 7.2 million Macs, up from 6.9 million a year earlier, according to IDC.
The numbers shared by Gartner and IDC are estimates and do not reflect Apple's actual sales, and the numbers can fluctuate significantly over time. In the past, estimates were confirmed when Apple provided quarterly earnings results and actual Mac sales information, but Apple no longer lists iPhone, iPad, and Mac sales, so exact sales numbers cannot be determined.
