After the Mac Studio hit the market last week, we saw a few teardowns showing off everything that's going on inside the machine. While it's already clear that Mac Studio has free storage slots, it's not clear whether users can upgrade on their own. Now iFixit has been able to confirm that the Mac Studio's internal storage, while replaceable, is not upgradeable.
Similar to the Mac Pro, the Mac Studio has two relatively easy-to-access SSD ports inside. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean users can buy a specific configuration of Mac Studio and then add a new SSD with more storage.
After testing by iFixit, Mac Studio cannot recognize SSD combinations different from those shipped from the factory. The repair company tried to combine multiple SSDs in Mac Studio, but the machine didn't recognize any of them. Even with a single SSD of a different capacity than the original, Mac Studio refuses to recognize it.
One thing that does work, however, is replacing the internal SSD with another SSD of the same capacity. In this case, the Apple Configurator app will allow you to install macOS on that SSD, after which Mac Studio will work normally.
Not sure why Apple opted for a removable SSD when it can't be easily replaced, but it may have something to do with Apple's new self-repair program - which will provide repair parts to consumers who need them. This way, if users have any issues with the SSD in Mac Studio, they can replace it with a new one.
Teardowns reveal that the Mac Studio, like other Macs, has proprietary screws hidden everywhere, making repairs more difficult. The cooling system with two fans is probably the largest on any Mac except the Mac Pro, and other components like RAM are built into the SoC.
In addition to Mac Studio, iFixit also showed a preview of the inside of Studio Display. The built-in camera looks similar to what Apple uses in some iPhone and iPad models, and as expected, taking it apart isn't an easy task either.
