Latest Windows 10 build (KB5011543) fixes critical BSOD error caused by Bluetooth

Microsoft has released important fixes for critical Bluetooth bugs that cause Windows 10 Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) since the January build of KB5009596. The fix was released with the latest Windows 10 builds 19042.1620, 19043.1620, and 19044.1620 (under KB5011543) released earlier today.

Microsoft describes the issue this way:

Some organizations that pair Windows devices with Bluetooth devices may receive an error after installing KB5009596 or later updates. Message "Your device has encountered a problem and needs to restart." Blue screen and "Stop code: IRQ NOT LESS OR EQUAL". Errors logged on affected devices will be logged in the System log in Event Viewer as "Microsoft-Windows-WER-SystemErrorRe Event 1001" with the text "The computer has restarted from a bug check. Bug check: 0x0000000a". This issue occurs when certain Configuration Service Provider (CSP) policies are in place that affect Bluetooth A2dp profiles. This can be observed in one of two situations:

  • During the reboot after the update installation process, if the Windows client device was previously paired with a phone or with another audio device via Bluetooth.
  • After installing the update, the user will now pair the updated Windows client device with a new phone or audio device via Bluetooth.

Since CSPs are typically associated with enterprise environments, home users may not be affected by this.

Microsoft also provides a workaround for IT administrators:

To mitigate this issue, IT administrators using Intune or other tools can follow the following before installing this update Steps to modify the Windows registry:

  1. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PolicyManager\current\device\Bluetooth\
  2. Replace the following registry key:{0000110a-0000-1000-8000-00805f9b34fb} and {0000110b-0000-1000-8000-00805f9b34fb}Add to ServicesAllowedList value
