Microsoft has released a new Insider build of its Windows 11 operating system. Windows 11 Insider Preview build 22610 introduces new Group Policies for IT admins that modify the default functionality of the taskbar, Start menu, and system tray.

Administrators can enable the following policies in Group Policy Editor or deploy them using Microsoft Endpoint Manager. In the new Insider build, all policies are listed under User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar.

Here is a list of policies:

  • Disable quick settings popup
  • Disable notification center and calendar popup
  • Disable all taskbar settings
  • Disable Search (across Start and Taskbar)
  • Hide task view from taskbar
  • Block custom "Pin" in Start
  • In Start Hide "Recommended" in Start
  • Disable Start context menu
  • Hide "All apps" in Start

Administrators can configure policies to restrict Windows 11 PCs function on. Some limit core operating system functionality, such as search, and others block pop-ups that may distract users. These policies may be useful in certain environments, such as on kiosk systems where users should not be allowed to run searches or use other functionality that should not be available in the first place.

New Windows Insider builds include improvements to the Family Safety widget. The widget supports a new location sharing view that shows the location of connected family members on a map, people using the Family Safety app on their devices. Microsoft noted that there's also an improved Screen Time view that shows how long different devices and apps were used on a given day.

The new version no longer has a watermark on the desktop, but Microsoft notes that the watermark will be restored in a future operating system update.

Task Manager in Windows 11 version 22610 uses accent colors for heatmaps.

Dev and Beta builds disable the SMB1 client by default; this will be the default in the next feature update version of Windows 11. Currently, this is limited to Insider builds of the operating system.

Microsoft continues to fix a number of issues in new Insider builds. The release of Windows 11 version 22H2 is approaching, and it's an important release for Microsoft because it gives an indicator of the maturity of the operating system.
