The Canary version of Microsoft Edge is where you tend to try out new features. Edge Canary is updated with experimental features, and some features are quietly disappearing from the browser without any official confirmation. That's exactly what's happening with Edge's experimental "Workspace" feature coming in 2021.

Since early 2021, Microsoft developers have been working on a new feature called Workspaces for Microsoft Edge. Like Google's tab groups, Microsoft Edge's workspaces are a great way to maintain groups of browser tabs for work, play, or personal use.

It is designed to eliminate clutter in the browser and help users trying to balance work and personal computing. The feature was removed from the browser last year, but it's apparently back, and references to "workspaces" have appeared in the latest update.

#The Microsoft Edge Team is great at listening to feedback and decided to bring back Workspaces functionality to give people what they want. This means that — at least for Microsoft Edge Canary — the feature will be back soon.

Microsoft has added a toggle to enable or disable workspaces from browser settings. The toggle doesn't work, but it shows that the function is set back.

What is the edge workspace feature?

In a way, Edge’s Workspaces are similar to Chrome’s Tab Groups, which will make tab management easier.

As you can see in the screenshots above and below, Microsoft Edge’s workspace can contain multiple tabs. You can create a workspace and give it a name or color to distinguish it from other workspaces. For example, you can use it to separate work/projects and social tabs.

Edge saves grouped tabs, so if you accidentally close an Edge window without deleting the workspace, it will still be available the next time you launch the browser .

It can be used as a replacement for existing tab groups.

Currently, it's not possible to try out this new tab group feature, but you'll need to be running at least Edge Canary 100 or higher to see the switch.

Office Integration for Microsoft Edge

In addition to Workspaces, Microsoft Edge also gets Office integration. In the latest version, Microsoft has added an Office side panel. It includes links to web applications for Office products such as Word and PowerPoint.
