Windows 11 Dev finally has a better volume mixer, here's how to enable it

However, Microsoft is about to compete with EarTrumpet with a much-improved volume mixer in Windows 11 build 25281.

The recently released Windows 11 build 25281 has a new and hidden volume mixer that finally lets you change the volume of specific apps, switch between output devices, and enable additional features like Space Audio. Of course, you'll still have to make an extra click to access the new volume slider, but at least Windows 11 no longer requires going into the Settings app or just using the Game Bar to make an app play louder.

It’s worth noting that Microsoft hasn’t announced the new volume mixer yet, so getting it to work requires enabling Hide ID using the ViveTool app. Using third-party software to modify your operating system is always risky, so back up important data before proceeding. Interestingly, users may be abandoning ViveTool soon, as Microsoft is reportedly working on a new settings section to manage experimental features.

How to enable the new volume mixer in Windows 11 build 25281

1. Download ViveTool from GitHub and extract the file into a convenient and easy-to-find folder.
2. Press Win X and select Terminal (Admin).
3. Switch the Windows Terminal to the Command Prompt profile using the Ctrl Shift 2 shortcut or click the down arrow button at the top of the window.
4. Use the CD command to navigate to the folder containing the ViveTool files. For example, if you have placed the ViveTool in C:\Vive, type CD C:\Vive.
5. Typevivetool /enable /id:42106010and press Enter key.
6. Restart your computer.
7. Click on the volume indicator and press the button next to the slider to open a new mixer.

If you change your mind and want to restore the original volume control, repeat the above steps and replace /enable with /disable# in the command in step 5 ##.
