Microsoft has finally launched a screen recording feature in the Windows 11 Snipping Tool. The highly anticipated feature, which debuted in October, is now available to Dev Channel Windows Insiders and will appear in version 11.2211.35.0 of the widely used built-in Windows app.

If you are a Windows Insider and have a PC signed up for the Dev Channel and on the latest version, you can easily test this new feature in the Snipping Tool. In fact, recording your screen in Windows 11 is now very easy, without the need for third-party apps like Xbox Game Bar or OBS Studio.

First, update the Snipping Tool app from the Windows 11 Microsoft Store. You should see the new version listed for you in the library under Updates and Downloads. After that, just launch the tool and select the new recording option at the top of the application. You can then select any part of the screen and start the recording process. Once complete, the Snipping Tool gives you a preview of your recording before you save and share it, similar to a standard screenshot.

Since this is an early beta version of the app, you may encounter some issues. You'll see a delay between clicking the Start Recording button and the actual recording starting. In another known issue, Microsoft says the Snipping Tool app window may not be restored correctly when opening a new snapshot from within the app.

Naturally, Microsoft first wants to get feedback on this feature from Windows Insiders. Once beta testing is complete, the screen recording feature in the Snipping Tool should be rolled out to everyone else as a regular app update or as part of Windows 11 feature rollback. Typically, this takes weeks or months. The company has done this in the past with similar app updates, such as the redesigned Paint app and the Clock app with Focus Sessions.
