Microsoft will release more features for Windows 11 Insiders
Microsoft appears to be preparing to release several new features in the Dev Channel for Windows 11 Insiders. Sources say many of these upcoming features will reintroduce missing functionality that wasn't included in the initial release of Windows 11. It's been two weeks since the latest Dev Channel release, leaving some wondering if something happened internally to cause the build to be paused. However, sources say Microsoft has been using the extra week to add brand new features and make some changes to the public preview branch (rs_prerelease) of Windows 11. This may be one of the reasons for the recent lack of new Dev Channel builds. However, also worth noting is the massive increase in the number of builds (up to 250xx), indicating that a new development semester is about to begin. Regardless, we can expect new features to arrive soon. Some of the changes include: Creating app folders in the Start menu Drag and drop support on the taskbar New acrylic or blur effects in the old title bar A new snap user experience called Snap Bar New gesture touch for opening the Start menu Supports quick settings panel. Now, let's take a closer look at some of these features. Application Folders in Start This upcoming feature has been highly requested by Windows 11 users, and it works exactly as you’d expect. When you click on an app and drag it onto another app, this creates a new folder that you can click on. This new feature allows users to be more organized on their Start menu. Snap Bar The new Snap Bar feature will introduce a new mechanism for snapping multiple application windows within Windows 11’s built-in snap grid system. There are currently two different ways to capture an application window: the drop-down menu that appears when you hover the mouse over the window control, or dragging the window to the corner of the screen. With the new Snap Bar feature, a third option will be available. Specifically, when you click and drag a window around the screen, users will see a bar panel appear at the top of the screen. New Acrylic/Blur Effect You’ll notice slight changes to the UI of the legacy title bar, as a new acrylic or blur effect will replace the familiar white title bar design. If you watched Windows Live in January, you should have an idea of what this new feature looks like, albeit low-quality. Start Menu and Quick Settings Changes Tablet users will be happy to know that some major improvements are also coming with new gestures. These gestures will allow easier access to the Start menu and Quick Settings panel by swiping up from the bottom of the screen. If you swipe up from the system tray, this will launch Quick Settings. On the other hand, swiping up anywhere else on the screen will open the Start menu. Taskbar Features Finally, Windows 11 users will finally experience missing features from the taskbar. These include drag-and-drop support, a better UI, and the ability to automatically hide the taskbar when using the device's tablet mode. Of course, it's likely that we missed several other features, or that Microsoft will announce more over time. Here are all the new features expected to be included in the Dev Channel for Insiders: App folders in Start Drag and drop on taskbar Quick Settings/Notification Center improvements Pinned files in File Explorer Acrylic title bar Snap Bar Capture UX Start/quick settings gestures using touch New live captions feature The next major version of Windows 11 is codenamed "Sun Valley 2," and these features will shape it. As always, Microsoft may still cancel or delay the arrival of some of these features, so we'll have to wait and see.
