We previously reported that Apple was working on technology that would allow iPhones to accept NFC payments. Today, Apple announced Tap to Pay on iPhone, which will allow merchants across the United States to accept NFC payments using Apple Pay. This will allow them to use contactless credit and debit cards and other digital wallets to receive money with a simple tap on their iPhone without the need for any additional hardware or payment terminals.
Tap to Pay will be available to payment platform and app developers so that they can integrate the feature into their iOS apps and offer it as a payment option to their business customers. Stripe will be the first payments platform to offer Tap to Pay to its customers, including the Shopify point-of-sale app starting this spring.
Jennifer Bailey, vice president of Apple Pay, said:
“As more consumers use digital wallets and credit cards to tap to pay, Tap to Pay on iPhone will Give businesses a safe, private and simple way to accept contactless payments and unlock a new checkout experience with powerful features, security and safety. The convenience of iPhone.
Pay with Working together, platforms, app developers and payment networks, we make it easier than ever for businesses of all sizes – from sole traders to large retailers – to seamlessly accept contactless payments and continue to grow their business ."
Tap to Pay will be available through the supported iOS app on iPhone XS or later devices. To use the feature, merchants prompt customers to pay using Apple Pay while holding an iPhone or Apple Watch. Customers can also use their contactless credit or debit card, or a digital wallet near the merchant’s iPhone, and payments will be completed securely via NFC.
Apple noted that Apple Pay is accepted by more than 90% of retailers in the United States. With Tap to Pay, nearly every business, large or small, can accept payments on iPhone at checkout.
Tap to Pay on iPhone will be available to app developers using their software development kits (SDK) in an iOS software beta launching later this year.
