Microsoft began rolling out a new media player for Windows 11 last November. But it's limited to users in the Insider Preview Program. When we try to install the application on the stable channel of the operating system, it does not work.
According to one user on reddit, this seems to have quietly changed. If you want to try out the app without participating in the beta, here's how to install the new media player in the Windows 11 Stable channel.
The new media player replaces the Groove Music app, so if you are using the latter, it will no longer be available after installing the latest version. You need to be on the latest Windows 11 version, 21H2 Build 22000.376, for these steps to work.
1. Go to https://store.rg-adguard.net/ and install the Groove Music app Paste the URL of the Microsoft Store listing into the text box. Here is the link:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/groove-music/9wzdncrfj3pt
2. Click on the right to show RP drop-down menu and select Fast channel.
3. Click the check mark button next to continue and a long list of links will appear. Look for the file named Microsoft.ZuneMusic_11.2111.54.0_neutral__~_8wekyb3d8bbwe.msixbundle. Download approximately 35 MB.
NOTE: There is a similar file numbered 54.70, approximately 92 MB. Do not download this version as it cannot be used to update the media player.
4. Run the file you downloaded and the operating system will display a pop-up window asking you if you want to update the media player. Click the Update button to confirm the operation and wait for it to complete the process.
The new media player is ready, you can find more information about its features in our previous article. You may have noticed that the title of this program is Media Player Preview since it is still in testing. However, now that the app is available on the Windows 11 Stable Channel, it's only a matter of time before Microsoft makes an official announcement.
The player doesn't appear to have any significant changes since it was first released. You can resize the application window to collapse the sidebar tabs, i.e. show only the icons, increase the size, or maximize the window to restore the tabs. I would prefer a button to toggle the sidebar. The size of the mini player cannot exceed a certain point. These are the only flaws in the app, which otherwise plays local media files very well.
The Start menu lists the application as a media player, but Windows Search does not recognize the name and the results show an older version of Windows Media Player. Even stranger, searching for Groove Music lists the new media player in the results. I guess the search index is still pointing to the old version since the Store app uses the same list.
It’s unclear if the app will also be available for Windows 10, but since the Groove app is being replaced, one can only assume that the media player will support the older operating system.
