Apple just announced a new version of macOS at WWDC 2022, and it will soon be rolling out to Macs around the world. The new operating system, macOS Ventura, comes with a neat little organization tool called Stage Manager. Once activated from Control Center, Stage Manager will neatly organize all open applications on one side of the screen.

The new utilities look very similar to how Mission Control currently works, but the company has confirmed they will work with other macOS windowing tools like Spaces. As long as we get new features that make it easier to do our daily tasks, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Stage Manager looks promising, as it automatically organizes running windows by application while centering the window you're working on. It also seems to automatically move apps and their accompanying windows to the center when you switch between different programs.

Apple hasn’t spent much time talking about Stage Manager, but it looks like it will also allow you to create multiple groups of the same app. For example, if you want to have two separate instances of Pages or Safari open at the same time, it looks like you can do that and quickly switch between them. Notably, Apple says you can also group windows together when working on specific tasks or projects that require different apps.

With the Stage Manager feature, iPadOS also allows you to have overlapping windows for the first time. That's right, Apple is also bringing Stage Manager functionality to iPadOS later this year, which you can use to resize windows, hide them behind other apps, and more. We'll have a dedicated article on iPadOS coming soon, so be sure to check it out for more details.

In addition to Stage Manager, the new macOS Ventura also brings many other noteworthy features. macOS Ventura and all updated features will be available for download as a free software update this fall. The developer beta of macOS Ventura is available to Apple Developer Program members at developer.apple.com starting today, while Mac users will get a public beta next month.
