After the latest macOS Monterey 12.3 update, users are reporting several issues when using external monitors, ranging from the Mac not detecting the monitor at all to inaccurate screen output.
In the ten days since the update became available to the public, users have reported issues with the update causing Macs with replacement logic boards and problems using game controllers. Adding to the list of issues, users are now reporting that the update is causing issues with external monitors.
After updating to the latest macOS update, your Mac no longer detects certain external displays connected via USB-C. As one user at Apple Support reports:
After updating my Mac mini to 12.3 today, my monitor now no longer displays images over USB-C and just keeps saying there is no signal on the monitor.
I tried HDMI and same problem. Occasionally it will show the picture, but once I shut down or restart the mac mini it won't show the picture. The mac is starting up. I had to resort to connecting it to my old TV via an HDMI connection.
This is so frustrating.
Other users had similar experiences. While many people have also reported issues with USB-C monitors, others have also reported not being able to recognize HDMI connections to their Macs. In the meantime, some users have been able to crowdsource potential workarounds. According to one user on the MacRumors forum, the problem stems from macOS not recognizing the DisplayPort protocol version, which means they have to change the version to an earlier, lower-quality version.
I have solved this problem (2022-03-15). On my monitor (LG LCD 27 27UN880-B IPS) I went into settings and lowered the DisplayPortVersion from the default v1.4 to v1.2. Once I lowered the monitor's DisplayPortVersion, my Mac with OS X 12.3 started recognizing the second monitor correctly. The new OS X update appears to have issues with the DisplayPortVersion 1.4 protocol (with faster data rates, faster refresh, and stream compression). Hope this helps.
Another short-term fix is to unplug the external monitor for a short period of time, plug it back into your Mac, then plug the monitor back into the power outlet and it should work. Some users have also reported issues when using two external monitors on their Mac.
Throughout the beta testing of macOS 12.3 there seems to have been an issue with only one external monitor being recognized when two are connected to the Mac. However, even after launch, problems persisted. As one user on the Apple support forums said:
2018 Mac Book Pro 15" and I have 2 external monitors (same viewsonic model), less than 2 years old. Update After getting to 12.3, one is recognized and one is not, I don't know why. I have changed the cables, connected other devices, including the iPad Pro (all works fine) I have tried all 4 ports on the machine, no difference. When plugged into a monitor it doesn't recognize, the Mac book flashes but never displays an image. The monitor seems to think it's connected (I don't get the no-signal warning) and nothing.... 8 * The monitor is powered on and the screen is on ( bleeds from the backlight). Another monitor (the exact same model) is connected and working fine.
Online reports indicate that these issues are not occurring when using Apple's new Studio Display; Occurs when using third-party monitors, such as those offered by BenQ and LG.
macOS 12.3 is Monterey’s biggest update since its release, and it brings Universal Control as well as several other new features.
