Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22572 lets you access File Explorer’s old menu directly, adds two stock apps

Microsoft has released Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22572 for users participating in the development channel. It adds a few new apps, changes a few options, and introduces a new shortcut to use File Explorer's old menu.

Windows 11's context menus have been criticized for being slow, and Explorer's shell menu is particularly difficult to use because it moves most of its useful shortcuts into the "Show more options" submenu. The extra clicking and browsing of a second menu makes the task a bit tedious.

Microsoft provides a faster way to access this menu in Windows 11 Build 22572. When you right-click a file, hold down the Shift key and Explorer will display the Show More Options menu directly.

Other improvements in Windows 11 Build 22572

Microsoft has renamed the Windows Terminal app and it is now called Terminal. Narrator now supports natural speech for all English language packs. Print Queue has a new interface that follows Windows 11 design standards. Focus Assist will display a snooze bell icon to indicate that Do Not Disturb is on. WMIC (Windows Management Interface Command Line) is now available as an optional Windows feature.

The touch keyboard icon toggle in the Settings app has been replaced with a drop-down menu. Can be set to never show, always show, or appear when a keyboard is not connected.

Microsoft bundles more stock apps in Windows 11

Microsoft Home Apps are now Inbox apps in Windows 11 Home (bundled program). It lets you manage family safety features like location tracking, set parental controls to block inappropriate websites, apps, games, set screen time activities for your kids, and monitor their digital activities on Windows, Xbox, and Android. Windows 11 Pro users can download the Microsoft Home app from the App Store.

Clipchamp is also a pre-installed app in the latest version of Windows 11. You need to be logged into your Microsoft account to use it since it is a web-based service. I'm using Windows 11 Pro Edition in my virtual machine and it has Clipchamp bundled with it.

Microsoft acquired the video editor program last year, but it's not free to use unless you're fine with 480p SD video. Clipchamp subscriptions are quite expensive, costing $72 per year to export 720p HD video, and a whopping $150 per year to save full HD 1080p media. You might as well uninstall the Clipchamp app and use OBS, which is open source, free and works offline.

Microsoft Defender Preview is now available in the US

Microsoft Defender Preview is now generally available for Versions for Windows, iOS and Android. It is available for testing by users in the United States. Go to the list of apps from the link below and download it.

The company describes Microsoft Defender as "an online security application that helps families and individuals stay safe online with malware protection." It is a dashboard from which you can monitor and manage the security of your device. Interestingly, the security app's webpage mentions that Microsoft Defender Preview is also coming to macOS soon.

The FAQ mentions that the app will be free during the preview period, after which it will require a Microsoft 365 Home or Personal subscription. For those who don’t know, the antivirus software that comes with Windows 10 and 11 is called Windows Security, not Windows Defender or Microsoft Defender. So, don’t worry, free antivirus software doesn’t come at a premium.

Coming soon to Windows 11 and 10 - Search Highlights

Microsoft says a new search update will be rolling out to Windows 11 next week. The updated version highlights fun moments like holidays, anniversaries, and displays popular searches and more. The search box automatically updates web content regularly. The highlight experience can be turned off from Settings > Privacy & Security > Search Settings page > Show Search Highlights.

The left panel of the search interface will list your recently used applications, files, settings, and websites. Users signed in with a work or school account can access their files and contacts through Microsoft Search.

Fixes in Windows 11 Build 22572

Accessing a network share in File Explorer, opening Outlook, or logging into Windows should no longer cause the error check to appear CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED error. Touchpad issues and audio stuttering reported in the previous version of Windows 11 Build 22567 have been alleviated. Fixed an issue that prevented startup sounds from playing.

Explorer.exe should not crash when accessing Windows Mixed Reality. Scrollbars should render correctly in Win32 programs. Right-clicking the Start button or using Win X no longer crashes Explorer.

Known issues in Windows 11 Build 22572

Clicking File Explorer's suggestion results while typing may not display items. Microsoft says it's working to resolve issues related to icon size, visual bugs, and text clipping in the OneDrive flyout panel. There's an issue with the new Task Manager's dark mode where tooltips don't display correctly.

The tablet-optimized taskbar does not collapse after launching an app or clicking outside the expanded taskbar. The bar may overlap in certain areas of the operating system, such as widgets.
