Apple has released an updated version of its iMovie software with major new features that make it easier to create edited movies and videos on iPhone and iPad.

The iMovie 3.0 update, currently available starting Tuesday, comes with two new features designed to help aspiring video creators, students and others create outstanding video content. According to Apple, the biggest updates come to the iPhone and iPad.

One of the new features is the addition of storyboards, which replaces the blank timeline with 20 different "storyboard" templates to give users a head start. Templates range from cooking tutorials to news reports.

Each storyboard has a short list that organizes clips in a way that tells a specific narrative. Storyboards feature placeholders with illustrative thumbnails, as well as user-edited video shooting suggestions.

Users will be able to add, reorder and delete shots from the storyboard. They can also incorporate their own style into storyboards with different titles, transitions, fonts, filters, and more. Music added to a track dynamically adjusts to fit the length of the project – users can also control splitting, trimming and volume levels.

Apple has also added a new "Magic Movie" feature that automatically creates custom videos with just a few taps. Similar to the Memory feature in Photos, users simply select an album or a group of images or videos and Magic Movie will identify the best parts and create a project.

Like storyboards, these magic movies are customizable and users can apply different styles to them.

These new features will be rolled out as iPhone and iPad exclusives, which means they won’t appear in the macOS version of iMovie, at least initially.

Both new features are available on iPhone and iPad devices that support iOS 15.2 or later. iMovie 3.0 is currently available for download from the App Store.
