Windows 11 Dev build 22579 includes new USB encryption policy, Start menu, taskbar improvements

Microsoft today released a new Windows 11 Dev Channel build 22579, and like all recent Dev Channel releases, this one includes new features and changes. As usual, there are many bug fixes.

What's new in Build 22579

Exclude USB removable drives from encryption

We A new policy is being introduced to allow IT administrators to exclude USB removable drives from BitLocker encryption. This will solve the problem of automatic or accidental encryption of built-in storage in specialized devices such as cameras, audio recorders, conferencing systems, medical equipment, etc. When this policy is enabled, you will not be able to encrypt storage on the exclusion list and if you connect such storage to the device when "Deny write access to removable drives not protected by BitLocker" You are not prompted that the encryption policy is enabled. Until now, this policy could only be configured via an MDM custom OMA-URI.

Here are the steps IT administrators can take to exclude storage from encryption:

Step 1: Collect the hardware IDs of the devices you want to exclude. You can obtain the hardware ID of your device by following the steps listed in this documentation page.

Step 2: Configure the BitLocker exclusion list policy in Intune:

  1. Log in to the Endpoint Manager portal.
  2. Go to Device > Configuration Files.
  3. Click "Create Profile".
  4. Select the platform "Windows 10 and later" and profile type: "Template", then select the template name: "Custom".

Now let’s take a look at the changes and improvements brought by the new Build 22579:

Changes and improvements

[General]

  • As some Insiders have noticed, in addition to our updated print queue experience, we have also updated so that win32 applications that use CPrintDialog to display a print dialog will now display our modern print dialog. Additionally, modern print dialogs automatically discover local network printers. If you select a new printer, it will be installed without going into Setup. Please submit feedback about your printing experience in the Feedback Center under Devices & Drivers > Printing.
  • We are returning the Open With dialog redesign introduced with Build 22567 back to the previous design. We plan to restore this feature in the future after resolving some performance issues discovered by Windows Insiders. Thanks for your feedback!
  • To ensure users can still quickly access the console after uninstalling Windows Terminal, we are updating the WIN X menu to point to Windows PowerShell. If you have Windows Terminal installed and want to open Windows PowerShell in Windows Terminal, we recommend that you go to Settings > Privacy & Security > For Developers and set Windows Terminal as your default Terminal application. The magnifying glass and on-screen keyboard now have new Fluent style icons.
[Start Menu]

You can now name your application folders in Start. To name a folder, simply create a folder (the default name is "Folder"), open it, click "Edit Name" and enter your folder name. Alternatively, open the folder with keyboard focus, then select the text box and start typing.

[Getting Started App]

We’ve added pinned site suggestions to the Getting Started app so you can easily pin sites to task bar. To find this new feature, launch the Get Started app and navigate to the Apps & Sites We Think You'll Like page. Click on any site suggested on the page to pin it to your taskbar so you can access the sites you care about with one click.
Please submit feedback in the Feedback Center (WIN F) under Apps > Start.

Note: Some of the fixes mentioned here in Insider Preview builds from the active development branch may make their way into servicing updates for Windows 11 builds that are officially released on October 5, 2021.

The known issues in Build 22579 are:

[Tablet-optimized taskbar]

  • When launching the application Or the taskbar doesn't always collapse automatically after clicking outside the extended taskbar on a 2-in-1 device.
  • Some areas of the operating system do not yet track the height of the expanded taskbar on 2-in-1 devices, so you may see overlapping components, such as widgets that overlap the taskbar.

[File Manager]

  • Opening the suggested results that appear when you enter a search term in File Explorer's search box may not help effect.
  • We're fixing issues with icon size, visual bugs, and text clipping in flyouts showing OneDrive storage.

[Widget]

  • Sometimes, when pinning from the feed, the pinned widget is placed on top instead of the other pinned widgets underneath the component. If this happens, this will automatically correct within 30 minutes, moving the recently pinned widget to the expected default location. Alternatively, you can log out of the widget board and log back in immediately to resolve the issue.
  • After rearranging widgets in the widget board, some users are experiencing incorrect rendering of widgets in the fixed section. If this happens, logging out of the widget board and logging back in immediately should resolve the issue.

[Important]

  • The Clock app has not yet updated the Windows focus state when configuring a focus session within the app. This will be addressed in a future app update.

[Narration]

  • In the latest version, natural sounds occasionally break. Restart Narrator to resolve the issue.

[Live Subtitles]

  • Some full-screen apps (such as video players) prevent live subtitles from displaying.
  • Certain applications located near the top of the screen and closed before running live captions will relaunch behind the live caption window located at the top. Use the system menu (ALT Spacebar) while the application has focus to move the application's window further down.
  • When live subtitles are at the top, the very top of a maximized application (e.g., title bar window management buttons) cannot be reached by touch.

[Task Manager]

  • When Task Manager is configured for dark mode, some tooltips do not accurately display preferred visual settings.

Dev channel releases are now called the "NI_RELEASE" or Nickel branch in preparation for major feature updates to Windows 11 later this year.
