How to use Universal Control on macOS Monterey
How to use Universal Control on macOS Monterey
- Make sure you are running macOS Monterey 12.3 or later on all Macs you plan to use this feature on. If you have a Mac/iPad combo, your iPad should be running iPadOS 15.4 or later.
- You can use up to three Mac/iPad devices simultaneously—at least one of them must be a Mac.
- Place two or three devices side by side.
- Make sure you have Bluetooth, WiFi, and Handoff enabled on all of these devices.
- Universal controls are enabled by default, so this feature will run automatically unless you turn it off yourself.
- Treat all two/three screens as one entity. So just move your cursor to the edge of one screen towards the other to switch to another device. Do the same when dragging an item from one device to another—drag it across the screen so that it goes across the edge toward the other device.
- To change the settings of Universal Control, go to System Preferences > Displays > Advanced.
This feature is a very welcome addition to macOS and iPadOS. This is especially useful if you're an illustrator — doodle on iPad, then easily drag and drop the file on your Mac to insert the doodle into a Keynote presentation you're working on. The possibilities are endless! iPadOS 15.4 and macOS Monterey 12.3 are currently in beta — to use this feature, you'll have to wait for the public release (likely in the spring) or sign up for the beta program. Additionally, the feature itself is still in beta, so it may not always work as expected. To sign up for the beta program on your iPad or Mac device, follow these steps:
- Go to beta.apple.com using Safari on your device.
- Sign up for the beta version.
- Download the beta configuration file.
- If you're using an iPad, go to the Settings app and click on the beta profile banner at the top.
- Install configuration file.
- Restart your device.
- Go to the Software Updates section as usual and download and install the available beta version.
