Microsoft: Windows 10 or Windows 11 takes eight hours to successfully install updates

Windows Update is one of the reasons people criticize Windows. Over the past few years, Microsoft has made various changes and improvements to improve the performance of Windows Update.

For example, Microsoft has begun offering driver updates through a new optional updates page. The company has also added features like active hours, servicing stack updates, experience packs, update stack packs, smaller update packs, enablement pack concept, and the ability to pause Windows Updates on Windows Home edition.

You may have noticed that Microsoft has also made significant changes to its AI and ML models to better understand why and how Windows Update fails on certain configurations. It turns out that one of the most important factors is the duration of device uptime and its connection to Windows updates.

If you frequently turn off your device or disconnect it from the Internet, you will not be able to successfully install quality and feature updates. This is true even if the device does not download Windows updates. When a device has not reached a certain connection time, it is more susceptible to failed Windows updates.

Specifically, Microsoft's internal data shows that it takes at least eight hours for a device to successfully install Windows updates and apply their changes. This includes at least two consecutive connection hours and six total connection hours after the update is available for download.

"This allows for successful downloads and background installations, and the ability to restart or resume once the device is active and connected," Microsoft noted in a new blog post.

Microsoft revealed that 50% of outdated devices do not meet minimum updated connectivity measurement standards.

If you're having trouble dealing with Windows Updates, you can also follow some tips Microsoft shared last year. According to the company, you have to install Windows on a faster drive (SSD), which can speed up the installation process by six times compared to an HDD.

Also, Microsoft wants you to use a single antivirus or file system filter driver instead of using Windows Defender with 3rd party antivirus software. If you use both security solutions, Windows Update may not work properly.
