Microsoft considers adding more ads to Windows 11s File Explorer

It seems that the tabbed interface isn’t the only new feature coming to File Explorer in Windows 11. According to a Twitter post from Florian (@lobo09), Microsoft is testing text ad banners in File Explorer.

Florian posted a screenshot of File Explorer in Windows 11 showing a Microsoft Editor extension ad. Because that's exactly what Windows users think when browsing files.

It appears that the company is currently A/B testing the new banners in the latest Windows 11 preview builds, and Microsoft has yet to confirm whether it plans to show ads to all Windows 11 users.

This is not the first time Microsoft has placed ads in various parts of the Windows UI. For example, in Windows 10, File Explorer used to show the OneDrive banner. Additionally, Microsoft has tried using various banners and prompts to push WordPad users to Office Online (not to mention a desperate effort to enforce the Edge browser).

While we don’t know if we’ll actually see new ads in File Explorer, you can expect Microsoft to continue using a variety of user-hostile practices to push its service. Microsoft is also hoping to make easy money from Windows users by bundling Windows 11 with a new video editor that comes with a ridiculously high subscription fee.
