Windows 11: New in File Explorer is deeper OneDrive integration

Windows 11’s File Explorer and Microsoft’s OneDrive are two of the most popular tools today, and the tech giant believes the two features can come in handy if used together.

Microsoft has been slowly taking steps to improve OneDrive's integration with its various apps and Windows 11 itself, and now an update to File Explorer in Build 22593 reveals that the company has further plans to bring OneDrive into the mix.

In preview builds, it quickly became apparent from Settings that OneDrive integration has arrived and is now available to some users. Unlike OneDrive shortcuts or ads, this new integration is very deep and may be a great addition for some users. As you can see in the screenshot below, OneDrive now has its own "Home" in File Explorer.

Windows 11 22H2 basically allows you to configure OneDrive as the default folder in File Explorer. Default folder means File Explorer will launch with "OneDrive" instead of an item in "Quick Access/Home" or "This PC". If you want to try out the new features, please use the following steps:

  • Update to preview the build on a test machine.
  • Open File Explorer > Folder Options.
  • Select "OneDrive" under "Open File Explorer..".
  • Click OK to apply changes.
  • Once completed, you can launch Explorer and quickly access your OneDrive folder.

Another OneDrive feature in Windows 11 is a new OneDrive button that appears in the upper right corner of File Explorer.

As you can see in the screenshot above, the OneDrive button appears when you use a cloud service and enable sync. The OneDrive pop-up displays information related to OneDrive uploads and several options for customizing the experience.

For example, you can use this new menu to monitor sync status and storage usage in real time. You can also monitor certain settings, manage storage or access OneDrive (respecting default selections) and manage advanced features in your web browser. If you make any significant changes to your cloud storage service, it will be reflected in File Explorer as well.

These undocumented features may or may not be available in the final release of Windows 11 version 22H2.

Other improvements to Explorer

  • Tab support
  • Contextual suggestions (contact suggestions when sharing files)
  • A new side column.
  • Folder preview support.
