Windows 10 Patch Tuesday (KB5010342) is released — heres whats new and broken

It’s the second Tuesday of the month, which means it’s Patch Tuesday again. So today Microsoft is rolling out the February 2022 monthly security updates (also known as "Build B") on Windows 10 for the latest versions 20H2, 21H1, and 21H2. The new update is distributed under KB5010342, boosting builds to 19042.1526, 19043.1526 and 19044.1526.

You can find a separate link to download new updates on Microsoft Update Catalog at this link.

The main highlight of this release is the security updates for Windows 10, and typically the Redmond company also lists known issues with the updates, which is always handy. Here are the symptoms and their respective solutions:

Symptoms Solutions
Windows installation devices created from custom offline media or custom ISO images may have Microsoft Edge Legacy removed by this update, but will not be automatically replaced with the new Microsoft Edge. This issue will only be encountered if you create a custom offline media or ISO image by incorporating this update into the image without first installing the Standalone Servicing Stack Update (SSU) released on or after March 29, 2021.

NoteDevices that are connected directly to Windows Update to receive updates are not affected. This includes devices using Windows Update for Business. Any device connected to Windows Update should always receive the latest version of SSU and the latest cumulative update (LCU) without any additional steps.

To avoid this issue, be sure to consolidate SSUs released on or after March 29, 2021 into custom offline media or ISO images before integrating LCUs. To do this using the combined SSU and LCU package now available for Windows 10 version 20H2 and Windows 10 version 2004, you need to extract the SSU from the combined package. Use the following steps to extract using SSU:
  1. Extract the cab from msu through this command line (taking the package of KB5000842 as an example): Expand Windows10.0-KB5000842-x64.msu /f: Windows10.0-KB5000842-x64.cab
  2. Extract the SSU from the previously extracted cab through this command line: Expand Windows10.0-KB5000842-x64.cab /f:*
  3. You will then have the SSU cab, in this example named SSU-19041.903-x64.cab. Slide this file into your offline image first, then LCU.

If you have already encountered this issue by installing the operating system using affected custom media, you can install the new Microsoft Edge directly. If you need to deploy the new Microsoft Edge for Business broadly, see Download and Deploy Microsoft Edge for Business.

After installing the June 21, 2021 (KB5003690) update, some devices are unable to install new updates, such as the July 6, 2021 (KB5004945) or later update. You will receive the error message "PSFX_E_MATCHING_BINARY_MISSING". For more information and workarounds, see KB5005322.
After you install this update, when using Remote Desktop to connect to a device in an untrusted domain, the connection may fail to authenticate when using smart card authentication. You may receive the prompt "Your credentials are invalid. The credentials used to connect to [device name] are invalid. Please enter new credentials." and a red "Login attempt failed." This issue has been resolved using a Known Issue Rollback (KIR). Please note that it may take up to 24 hours for the solution to automatically propagate to unmanaged personal devices and unmanaged business devices. Restarting your Windows device may help the solution apply to your device faster. For enterprise-managed devices that have the affected updates installed and are experiencing this issue, you can resolve this issue by installing and configuring the special group policy linked below.

NoteYou need to restart the device after configuring special group policies. For help, see How to use Group Policy to deploy rollback for known issues. For general information about using Group Policy, see Group Policy Overview.

Group Policy Installation File:

  • Windows Server 2022
  • Windows 10 Version 2004, Windows 10 Version 20H2, and Windows 10 Version 21H1

Important Make sure you are using the correct Group Policy for your version of Windows.

Some older Windows 10 versions are also receiving updates today, listed below are links to their respective release notes (KB) and links to download them in the Microsoft Update Catalog.
