We’ve reached the weekend, which means we’ve also reached the end of the first official month of spring.
We all know what this means, don’t we? In fact, we're getting some updates from the Windows 11 Insider channel.
Today, only Canary (Build 25330) and the Development Channel received the new software to work with. If you are using Windows 11 and use large files, avoid installing KB5023778.
Let's cut off the suspense and get right into it. However, before we do that, we recommend you check out the information available about Microsoft's new Safety Copilot.
Build 23424 will help you save more battery
It’s finally Friday, so Microsoft has released a new build for Windows 11 Dev Channel Insiders. New build 23424 adds the option to get the latest updates faster with the help of toggles.
Additionally, this new version brings full-screen widgets, improved search performance in Settings, and more.
The company says it also improves File Explorer performance. And, as always, there are more bug fixes and other improvements.
The tech giant is now previewing a revamp of the widget board, with a larger canvas and dedicated sections for widgets and feed content with a clear separation between them.
You can use the 3-column widget panel if your device supports it. Not all Insiders will get this feature from the start.
Keep in mind that Microsoft has just started rolling out this feature, so it’s not yet available to all Insiders in the Developer Channel.
This month, we’re also looking at Content Adaptive Brightness Control (CABC), a feature most of us are already familiar with.
Expert Tip:
Some PC problems are difficult to solve, especially when they involve corrupted repositories or missing Windows files. If you are having trouble fixing errors, your system may be partially corrupted. We recommend installing Restoro, a tool that will scan your machine and determine what the fault is. Click here to download and start repairing.
The above features in Windows 11 will darken or lighten the monitor or areas of the monitor depending on the content being displayed.
The main goal here is to balance reduced power consumption with visual experience to save battery life.
And, starting with this version, the company is allowing the feature to work on laptops and 2-in-1s plugged into chargers, as well as desktop PCs.
You should know that this change will not be noticeable to most users and should result in lower energy consumption.
Last month, on the same canary channel, Microsoft added a USB4 hubs and devices page to the Settings app.
It mentioned that USB4 provides new productivity scenarios for docking, high-performance peripherals, displays and charging.
Now, let’s take a closer look at the rest of the changelog and identify what else we’re getting with this software release.
Changes and Improvements
[Input]
Changes have been made to help improve performance when using a high-polling mouse while gaming.
[Settings]
Windows Insiders can help us preview new experiences we’re developing. Insiders will start seeing a new toggle under Settings > Windows Update to get the latest updates as soon as they become available. This new toggle is intended for use in Beta channels to allow Insiders to more seamlessly switch to enabling packages. But since the Developer Channel doesn't use enablement packages, turning this switch on will not do anything for Insiders in the Developer Channel. However, by turning it on, a "Windows Configuration Update" will be made available via Windows Update, designed to help us ensure that this new switch connects correctly to our backend services before it is made available in the Beta channel. This update does not introduce any new content for Insiders.
Improved search performance in Settings.
The settings page for wheel devices like Surface Dial has been updated to better match Windows 11 design principles.
Fixes
[General]
Fixed an issue that caused voice access to take some time to open after using the wake command.
[File Explorer]
We fixed an issue that caused an error dialog to pop up when clicking the "Open File Location" command.
We fixed an issue that caused no action to be performed when clicking the Remove from List command.
[Input]
Changes have been made to help improve performance when using a high reporting rate mouse while gaming. As a reminder, if you have game performance feedback, please follow the steps below to submit actionable feedback.
[Settings]
Improved search performance in Settings.
[Open window]
Fixed an issue where Microsoft Edge tabs would be displayed when performing ALT tabs during the last flight, even if System > Multitasking Same goes for settings set to "Don't show tabs" >
[Task Manager]
Fixed an issue where the search icon could end up overlapping the Task Manager icon in the title bar.
Known Issues
[Search on taskbar]
There is an issue where after updating to build 23403, some people may Can't see the search box on the taskbar and/or the settings to adjust the search box experience on the taskbar. We are aware of this issue and are working on a fix.
If you have a Bing button in the search box on the taskbar and you restart your computer, you may see the Daily Rotation search highlight for a period of time before the Bing button is restored.
[File Explorer]
Access keys will appear inconsistently if the button is not pressed. Pressing the button will cause them to reappear.
Clicking the Share command currently displays the Windows Share Sheet (not OneDrive).
[Live Subtitles]
On ARM64 devices, installed via the Language and Regional Settings page if you switch languages in the Live Subtitles subtitles language menu Enhanced speech recognition support will require a restart of live subtitles.
Some languages shown on the Language & Region Settings page will indicate speech recognition support (e.g. Korean), but do not yet support live subtitles.
When adding languages through the Languages and Locales page, language feature installation progress may be hidden, and you may not see the installation of Enhanced Speech Recognition (required for live subtitles) complete. (You can monitor progress using the Language Options for that language. If this occurs, there may be an unexpected delay before the live subtitles setup experience detects this issue and allows you to continue.
Non Subtitle performance in English languages may be reduced, and out-of-language filtering is missing in non-English (US) languages, meaning incorrect subtitles will be displayed for speech in non-subtitled languages.
Microsoft Store Update
Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev channels running Microsoft Store and later version 22303.1401.x will see the following improvements roll out:
Install free apps and games from search results: We've introduced a new way to install free apps and games. Hovering over a free product on the search results page opens a new extension card experience where you'll find a convenient install button. This will trigger the installation without having to navigate to the product page.
New design when purchasing apps and games in the App Store: Discover a new and redesigned experience when purchasing apps and games in the Microsoft Store! The purchasing dialog's style is more consistent with Windows 11, giving you a more pleasant checkout experience.
New UX for the in-app rating dialog: Developers of your favorite apps and games often use Microsoft Store features that are requested from within the app or game Rating. We've updated this in-app tiering experience to make it faster, more reliable, and better aligned with Windows 11 styling.
