Microsoft has announced some new features coming to Windows 11. As part of the update, Microsoft said it will refresh the look of two key apps - Notepad and Groove Music (now called Media Player). Now, a few weeks after its beta release, the new notepad and media player are finally rolling out to all users. Starting Wednesday, the new Notepad and media player will be available to all Windows 11 users through the Microsoft Store. Similar to previous updates released for native apps, Notepad and Media Player apps are getting a Fluent Design makeover along with rounded corners for windows or buttons. Since the redesigned apps are brand new, Microsoft is currently opting to keep the classic versions of Notepad or Groove Music as the default apps. The new Notepad and Windows Media Player will be installed as new preloaded default applications on PCs on millions of devices later this year or next year. A closer look at the new Notepad A major design update for Notepad introduces Fluent Design and a WinUI revamp that brings the app in line with the rest of the Windows 11 interface. As mentioned, Notepad now uses WinUI controls, so you have better access to fonts, new animations for drop-down menus, and more. Microsoft has also added rounded corners to Notepad's windows, buttons, and other areas. What's more, Notepad now comes with its own settings page, allowing users to customize fonts from a drop-down list. The settings page even lets you switch between dark, light, and system themes. While rounded corners may seem like a minor change, Notepad's settings page will be useful in the long run as the tech giant adds more customization features. Little things like dark mode are also welcome here. It's also worth noting that Notepad retains its simplicity, and users can still access features like Find. A closer look at the media player After nearly three months of testing the new Media Player, Windows Media Player is finally available for everyone on Windows 11. Media Player is replacing Groove Music, an application that was originally added with Windows 10 and has been the default audio player for some time. Interestingly, Microsoft didn't call the new Media Player a "sequel to the iconic Windows Media Player," which was one of the most popular applications at the time. The media player is being promoted as an alternative to Groove Music. Therefore, Movies and TV apps (which can only play media content) are here to stay for now. To download Notepad and Media Player, you need Build 22000.346 or higher. If you're already using the latest production version of the operating system, you can download the two new apps by heading to the Microsoft Store and checking for updates. While the Notepad interface is simply updated, the media player requires data migration, which is done automatically if you use Groove Music. After the apps, you will find Media Player instead of Groove Music in the Start menu apps list. During our testing, we noticed that the new app update was available on some (but not all) of our Windows 11 devices. We suspect the updated Notepad and Media Player will be part of Windows 11 Sun Valley, and most users will have access to the update by the end of the week.
