Home >Common Problem >Apple Studio Display includes 64GB of storage, but only 2GB is used
A developer discovered that Apple's Studio Display includes 64GB of onboard storage, but the display actually uses only 2GB.
As developer "Khaos Tian" highlighted on Twitter, the Studio Display only uses 2GB of its 64GB internal NAND storage. Firmware updates may require some free space, but the 62GB of unused space currently appears to be otherwise useless. Apple hasn't confirmed the Studio Display's internal storage amount in its technical specifications.
This finding may not be surprising given that the Studio Display contains the A13 Bionic chip. The A13 Bionic was launched with the iPhone 11 series in 2019 and was subsequently offered in the second-generation iPhone SE and ninth-generation iPad. None of these devices are available in any storage configuration below 64GB, which may indicate that the small amount of NAND storage is not compatible with the A13's storage controller.
Economies of scale may also be to blame, with production costs likely to be higher for pairing the A13 with a smaller amount of storage than the same 64GB systems used in the iPhone 11 and ninth-generation iPads that are still on sale today.
This discovery means that, overall, the Studio Display contains the exact same 2.65GHz A13 Bionic chip as the ninth-generation iPad, a 12MP ultrawide front-facing camera setup with center stage, and a 64GB base storage configuration. It's also clear now that the Studio Display has better specs than the second-generation Apple TV 4K, which has an A12 Bionic chip and only 32GB of storage in its base configuration.
Last week, news broke that the Studio Display is running a full version of iOS 15.4, the exact same version used by the iPhone and iPad, which means updates to the display's functionality will be included as part of an iOS update.
