Many people have expressed concerns about the environment and are committed to using clean energy sources, such as solar and wind power, where feasible. For those interested in clean energy charging, several top iPhone models can be configured to charge only when connected to a power source that uses clean energy from the grid.

Although it’s just a small step, adopting this practice can significantly reduce one’s carbon footprint and have a positive impact on the environment. Clean energy charging operates discreetly in the background, similar to optimizing battery charging, allowing users to contribute to improving the environment.

To enable clean energy charging, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Settings menu on your device.
  2. Select "Privacy and Security" and then "Location Services."
  3. Scroll down to the "System Services" section and select it.
  4. Make sure "System Customization" is turned on by sliding the switch to the right and make sure it is highlighted in green.
  5. Scroll down to "Important Locations" and select it. If it's off, slide the switch to the right to enable it. You may need to provide your Face ID or password to make this change.
  6. Return to the Settings menu and scroll down to Battery.
  7. Select "Battery Health & Charging".
  8. Under "Clean Energy Charging," slide the switch to the right to turn it on.

Clean Energy Charging is a feature that works by downloading carbon emission forecasts as soon as an iPhone (such as the new iPhone 14) is connected to a charging source. The process runs seamlessly in the background, using the phone's location to determine nearby energy networks. Based on the information collected, the feature limits charges as needed. However, it's worth noting that clean energy charging is currently only available in the United States.

Additionally, the feature is only enabled in locations where users spend the most time, such as their home, office, local coffee shop, or friends/family homes. It automatically deactivates if the user is traveling or in a new location where clean energy charging is not an option but full use of the phone is required.

Clean energy charging also has a coverage function. If users see a notification indicating the estimated time it will take to fully charge their phone, but they are in a hurry and need to charge faster, they can touch and hold the notification and select "Charge Now" to temporarily disable clean energy charging.
