Windows 10 21H2 is now widely available, Windows 11 is still optional

Back in November 2021, Microsoft began rolling out the Windows 10 November 2021 Update (version 21H2) to compatible devices. Unlike Windows 11 version 21H2, the Windows 10 November 2021 Update only includes minor improvements such as new virtualization features, Windows Subsystem for Linux changes, and other fixes.

Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 10 will be supported until at least October 2025, but it will not add new features to Windows 10. Windows 11, on the other hand, will receive annual feature updates that include quality improvements and new features.

In updated documentation, Microsoft has now confirmed that Windows 10 version 21H2 is available to everyone who manually clicks the "Check for Updates" button. As you probably know, users who click "Check for Updates" are officially called "Seekers." If you don't click the button, you will automatically receive updates in the future.

Microsoft says that the 21H2 version will have a fast installation experience as feature updates will be installed like monthly cumulative updates. Additionally, Microsoft plans to force-install Windows 10 version 21H2 on devices that are nearing the end of their service period.

"We will continue to train our machine learning models at every stage to intelligently roll out new versions of Windows 10 and provide a smooth update experience," Microsoft said.

According to the official release notes, Windows 10 21H2 supports Wi-Fi 6 using the Wi-Fi Protected Access 3 Hash-to-Element protocol (WPA3 H2E). This feature is designed to provide better protection against Wi-Fi side-channel attacks. For example, attackers won't be able to easily steal Wi-Fi passwords and other sensitive information.

Windows 11 is still optional for now

Please remember that Windows 11 is still an optional feature update for Windows 10 users, and Microsoft does not plan to force installation of the new operating system.

For users running older versions of Windows 10, they will only be automatically upgraded to supported versions of Windows 10.
