Ookla today shared its latest research focusing on WiFi performance at the 50 busiest airports in the United States. The top 17 airports have speeds between 100-203 Mbps, while the bottom 12 have speeds below 10 Mbps. Here’s how free WiFi stacks up at U.S. airports.

Ookla, the maker of the popular Speedtest app, released a new report on its blog:

“The holiday travel season is approaching in the U.S., and expect to spend more time in airports than you’d like. More. To help you understand if you have the speeds you need to stream video freely, or if you need to download these shows ahead of time, we expanded on our previous analysis to check out the free airport Wi-Fi at the 50 busiest airports in the U.S. , we also took a look at some of the other Wi-Fi options available at airports across the country to learn how to get the best network experience (even if you have to pay for it)."

On the other end of the spectrum, the 12 Slowest WiFi Speeds The average speed at the airport ranges from 5.23 to 48.4 Mbps.

Houston’s two airports ranked last with abysmal speeds of 8.79 and 8.9 Mbps.

But Pittsburgh International Airport is the most miserable, with a median download rate of only 5.23 Mbps!

Reduce Speed

Interestingly, Ookla also observed significant drops in median WiFi speeds at four major U.S. airports.

Seattle is down 32.06 Mbps, Chicago O'Hare is down 29.10, LAX is down 20.74, and San Francisco is down 13.87 Mbps.

"Our most recent global analysis of free airport Wi-Fi included 7 of these airports (over 8 SSIDs, with Denver having two). Compared to Q1 2022 and Q3 2022 , four airports experienced decreases in nominal download speeds: Sea-Tac (down 32.06 Mbps), O'Hare (down 29.10 Mbps), Los Angeles (down 20.74 Mbps), and San Francisco (down 13.87 Mbps). Dallas/ Average download speeds in Fort Worth increased by 7.02 Mbps during the same period. There was no significant difference in download speeds between the Hartsfield-Jackson dorm and the two SSID dorms in Denver. As airports and ISPs upgrade equipment, we generally expect speeds Will improve over time. When airport Wi-Fi speeds slow down, we typically expect it to be because the infrastructure has not kept pace with increases in passenger volume or internet usage."
