The iPhone 14 is the most affordable of Apple’s latest generation of iPhones. However, the company continues to sell the 2022 iPhone 13. Whether you're considering an upgrade or buying a new iPhone for the first time in several years, here's everything you need to know about the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14.
iPhone 13 vs. iPhone 14: Display
The iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 feature a 6.1-inch display, which Apple calls a Super Retina XDR screen. Each device has the same specs, including the same brightness, resolution, and colors:
- Super Retina XDR Display
- 6.1-inch (diagonal) OLED display
- HDR display
- 2532 x 1170 pixel resolution, 460 ppi
- 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio (typical)
- True Tone display
- Wide color gamut display (P3)
- Tactile touch
- 800 nits maximum brightness (typical)
- 1200 nits peak brightness (HDR)
Please note that unlike the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, neither the iPhone 13 nor the iPhone 14 comes with a ProMotion display with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. Instead, you get a 60Hz refresh rate.
Design

The design of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 is the same as the iPhone 12 we first saw in 2020. This includes flat edges made of aluminum, an edge-to-edge display and Face ID on the front, and a glossy finish on the back in the color of your choice.
While the iPhone 14 Pro features a new dynamic island design to house Face ID and the front-facing camera assembly, the iPhone 14 uses the same notch design as the iPhone 13. The overall dimensions of the iPhone 14 are almost the same as the iPhone 13. The only difference is that the iPhone 14 is slightly thicker and slightly lighter.
iPhone 13 Dimensions:
- Height: 5.78 inches (146.7 mm)
- Width: 2.82 inches (71.5 mm)
- Depth: 0.30 in (7.65 mm)
- Weight: 6.14 oz (174 g)
iPhone 14 Dimensions:
- Height: 5.78 inches (146.7 mm)
- Width: 2.82 inches (71.5 mm)
- Depth: 0.31 inches (7.80 mm)
- Weight: 6.07 oz ( 172g)
iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 are waterproof, dustproof, and splashproof with an IP68 protection rating to a maximum depth of 6 meters and a duration of up to 30 minutes. The devices are also built for durability, with a ceramic shielded front and aircraft-grade aluminum.
iPhone 13 vs. iPhone 14: Performance

The iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 perform almost identically, but the iPhone 14 has the advantage in a few areas. Both are powered by the A15 Bionic chip inside, but the version of the chip inside the iPhone 14 has an extra GPU core.
iPhone 13 chip:
- A15 Bionic Chip
- 6-core CPU, 2 performance cores, 4 efficiency cores
- 4-core graphics processor
- 16-core neural engine
iPhone 14 chip:
- A15 Bionic Chip
- 6-core CPU, 2 performance cores, 4 efficiency cores
- 5-core GPU
- 16-core neural engine
This difference is not is unlikely to significantly impact day-to-day performance in the real world. Perhaps more notably, the iPhone 14 has 6GB of RAM, while the iPhone 13 has 4GB of RAM. This may help extend the lifespan when it comes to adding new features to future versions of iOS.
Connectivity

If you want 5G connectivity, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 have you covered. Apple says this helps with "ultra-fast downloads and high-quality streaming." This includes support for mmWave 5G connectivity in the U.S., as well as support for sub-6GHz 5G in the U.S. and other countries.
One notable change, however, is that the iPhone 14 sold in the United States does not offer a physical SIM card slot. Instead, it relies entirely on eSIM technology. You can learn more about this in our complete guide.
Collision Detection and SOS

Apple continues to expand its collection of features designed to help you respond to emergencies. These are features you hope you never have to use, but just in case. The following two features are unique to iPhone 14:
- Crash detection can identify when you've been involved in a car accident and call emergency services
- Satellite connectivity can provide emergency services when you're not connected to a cellular or WiFi network
Rear camera
The iPhone 14 has some improvements over the iPhone 13 in terms of rear camera technology. There are still two lenses, the main camera and the ultra-wide-angle camera. One change is the addition of what Apple calls the "Photon Engine."
Apple describes it as a new computational photography feature that "brings a huge leap forward in low-light performance in photos across all cameras through deep integration of hardware and software." On iPhone 14, Apple says , compared with iPhone 13, the mid- and low-light performance of the ultra-wide-angle camera is improved by up to 2 times, the TrueDepth camera is improved by 2 times, and the main camera is improved by 2.5 times.

It is slower than original scripts like HTML2FPDF and produces larger files when using Unicode fonts, but supports CSS styles etc. and has a lot of enhancements. Supports almost all languages, including RTL (Arabic and Hebrew) and CJK (Chinese, Japanese and Korean). Supports nested block-level elements (such as P, DIV),
