It would be a huge misunderstanding of this trend to think that the trend represented by ChatGPT is part of AIGC.
ChatGPT As a product, it demonstrates a possible application scenario of a large language model (LLM), in which the ability of AI Generated Text is particularly impressive. Because of this boost, everyone's enthusiasm for this ability has been generalized to AI-generated images, videos, music and other content, and they have given it a general name called AIGC. This includes not only products like ChatGPT, but also excellent image generation like MidJourney and the Stable Diffusion series of tools. As for videos, music, etc., they are not so popular, but they are also included.
According to general logic, if the scope of AIGC is larger than ChatGPT, then is AIGC a superset of the unclear capabilities represented by ChatGPT? Woolen cloth?
My answer is no.
ChatGPT This kind of LLM does not open the door to AIGC, but opens the natural language user interface (LUI , Language User Interface). LUI is a world several orders of magnitude larger than AIGC. Compared to the sea of LUI, AIGC is a small pond.
#The interface between humans and machines is relatively stable and only changes once in decades. And the changes brought about by each change are profound. Take the interface between us and electrical appliances in modern times as an example:
The earliest was BUI(Button User Interface). No need to look it up, I made this word up, it means using buttons, knobs, switches, etc. as interfaces. However, the expression ability of this interface is too weak, and it cannot express loops, branches, etc. at all.
Then you enter TUI (Text User Interface), which is to enter commands on the command line and the computer executes them. Unix and DOS are this generation.
is followed by GUI (Graphic User Interface). This method, born in Xerox, used in Apple's Macintosh, and developed in Microsoft's Windows, has suddenly dominated all user interfaces from computers to mobile phones to tablets from the 1980s to the present.
Among them, the browser, as GIUI (Graphic Internet User Interface), gave wings to the Internet and directly detonated an era.
#With the emergence of large language models, people can finally interact with machines directly using natural language instead of GUI. So why did everyone prefer to use GUI instead of using language directly? Because the technology is not up to it. The accuracy of the speech recognition in the previous paragraph has just passed the test. As for understanding the semantic meaning and even being able to answer it perfectly, it is still far from reaching this ability.
Now the large models of ChatGPT and Hundred Flowers contend have appeared, which will further lower the threshold of use based on the already convenient graphical interface for us and computers. Simplifying something that is already very simple can help far more people than lowering the threshold for a complex thing (most people still won't be able to drive the Boeing 737 if it is three orders of magnitude less difficult to operate). This change will be related to everything in human society and every human-computer interaction. It will change all industries and all people's lives.
Compared with AIGC, although there are many exciting developments, this is a partial progress in the history of this technology development. It is only applied in the field of content production, which is a partial field. Its development still requires a longer period of exploration. Whether the path of large language models can be applied to images, videos, sounds and other fields is still unknown, and it is not clear where the next major breakthrough will be. Therefore, I think the concept of AIGC is greater than the essence, and it is not the same as LLM and LUI.
