Our sources previously confirmed that Microsoft is working on Windows 11 File Explorer gets a major makeover. The tech giant later made the suggestion during a Windows Insider webcast. The company confirmed that it will move File Explorer to WinAppSDK (Windows App SDK), enabling WinUI, new APIs, and other features.
Based on sources, leaks, and references in Windows 11 preview builds, here’s what we know about the new File Explorer upgrade:
File Explorer on Windows 11 will probably see its most significant update in the fall. This will be the biggest update to the file manager in a decade and will likely change the way you use it, with our sources hinting at web integration and deeper integration with Microsoft 365 in the final version.
So what are the new features in the new File Explorer? First, File Explorer's Home page is integrating with Microsoft 365, which will provide recommendations from your organization under the Recommended files section. These recommendations will feature large thumbnails so you can view the files easily.
Secondly, Microsoft is updating the title and will Options such as New or Copy have been moved to the file/folder view below the header. This reduces clutter and leaves room for search box functionality, which is also being updated to deliver faster results and a modern design.
File Explorer is getting an updated Details window pane that is more touch-friendly and powered by Microsoft 365, unlocking new user opportunities. Thanks to Microsoft 365 integration, you can view emails, topics, comments, tags, and more details about files shared in your organization right in File Explorer.
Another big change is the new "Gallery View". This new gallery view uses XAML and displays images from your computer in an attractive format, similar to modern Windows 11 applications.
It will automatically appear when you click the Gallery button under "Home" A series of pictures in a pictures folder, all sorted by date. You can click on the image and the details will automatically appear in the details pane on the right.
Search is very basic and doesn’t work most of the time as it can only be pressed Find images by filename, which isn't very useful.
