Microsoft announced an upgrade to the Bing search engine and Edge web browser that will support OpenAI’s popular ChatGPT chatbot AI to improve search and answering capabilities.
This news was announced at a press conference held by Microsoft in Seattle, USA. Not long ago, Microsoft just announced plans to invest billions of dollars in OpenAI, and one day ago, Google also announced that it will invest billions of dollars in OpenAI in the next few weeks. Launched Bard, a competitor AI tool similar to ChatGPT.
Due to OpenAI’s recent widespread use of ChatGPT, there has been significant interest in the “generative AI” technology behind these chatbots. Generative AI—that is, to use ChatGPT’s own definition—is a subfield of AI focused on generating new, original content similar to existing data.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that Microsoft and OpenAI have been working together for more than three years. The new integration between the two parties will adopt key enhancements of GPT-3.5, making the model faster and more powerful, and specifically optimized for search. He said he looks forward to working with Microsoft in the future and that both companies have a "deep sense of responsibility for ensuring the safe deployment of AI" - a major issue that has hindered competitors such as Google and Meta Platforms from accelerating the deployment of their own chatbots.
Microsoft said that a new AI large-scale language model called Prometheus will provide powerful power for Bing and is specially customized based on ChatGPT technology.
ChatGPT and other similar AIs provide conversational capabilities, which means the system on the other end can more easily understand natural language. Microsoft intends to use it for search, making it easier for users to describe what they are searching for without having to narrow down their terms, while also letting the AI delve deeper into documents on the web to find more relevant content results.
In addition to greater search relevance, Bing will include a sidebar that will annotate results with more comprehensive relevant answers when users need them, such as expanded stock information, sports Team data, weather forecast, etc.
The upgraded Bing will also allow users to enter queries up to 1,000 characters long, giving them plenty of room to post AI search questions.
In his keynote, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella called this a "new search paradigm" and a "new co-pilot" experience for users, referring to how AI tools can help workers perform tasks.
In addition to enhancing search capabilities, adding AI to the Bing search engine and browser will also introduce a Chat tab that allows users to maintain a conversation with the AI and receive answers to questions.
Chat content is not limited to regular searches. For example, if you forget a specific key ingredient or want to choose a substitute, it can answer questions about a cooking recipe so the AI can work like a savvy chef, figuring out the substitutions and the correct conversions. Also regarding cooking, Chat can even provide meal planning for vegetarian families who happen to have a member with a nut allergy, after which a complete shopping list is generated for all meals and preparation instructions.
The same chat interface can generate a travel itinerary for a five-day trip to Mexico City, including attractions and restaurants to visit for a complete cultural experience. The conversation doesn't stop there. When you open the chat interface, you can ask "How much does this trip cost?" or "Can we add something to the itinerary?" The AI will follow up on the answer or add additional content to the answer, and update the results at any time.
All of these examples are from conversational English questions submitted in chat, just like you are talking to someone else.
Microsoft plans to roll out the new Bing interface and mobile versions at a slow pace globally over the next few weeks. Desktop users can already get access to the new experience in limited preview today, and there's a waitlist for those looking to expand their deployment soon.
