AI is the branch of computer science that studies and develops algorithms capable of performing activities that typically require human intelligence. Most innovation today is driven by artificial intelligence or related technologies. Currently, there is a serious shortage of AI talents. According to relevant data, there are approximately 300,000 AI experts in the world, but there are still "millions" of job opportunities.
The rapid rise of artificial intelligence in enterprises is attributed to its ability to automate repetitive tasks and execution activities. Artificial intelligence algorithms are designed to create models that leverage big data to learn underlying relationships. The trained AI model is then deployed to automate routine tasks. Businesses are using AI to improve customer experience, from automated hotel check-in and data entry to chatbot-based customer service.
Although AI-driven products can indeed create value, the concept of automation has formed a strong public opinion among the public, and many people believe that AI will reduce jobs. After the first industrial revolution, people had to learn skills to become machinists and industrial workers, after the second industrial revolution to become electricians, and during the third industrial revolution to become software and hardware engineers.
We are in the fourth industrial revolution. It redefines the fundamental way we work, live and use products. The Fourth Industrial Revolution builds on the tremendous technological advances we have made over the past few decades. Advances in areas such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, cybersecurity, self-driving cars, and virtual reality are blurring the gap between the real and virtual worlds.
Businesses need talent to develop applications related to artificial intelligence. While the finished product can reduce customer service staff, the process of creating a chatbot also requires talent.
We need data engineers to store and process large amounts of data, annotators and linguists to analyze and annotate text, business analysts to define system requirements, subject matter experts to define customer success, and data scientists to create models, Software engineers build products, UX/UI people create great user experiences, and the list goes on. In this example, while chatbots may eliminate some customer service roles, they disproportionately create more technology-related roles.
In addition, artificial intelligence and machine learning are creating new economies. Advances in computer vision and natural language processing are good examples. It is impossible to imagine autonomous transportation or the metaverse without the commercialization of artificial intelligence. While some jobs will be redundant and eliminated, more and newer opportunities are emerging.
The severe shortage of AI talents and the extreme demand for artificial intelligence by enterprises are excellent opportunities for higher education institutions and enterprises to bridge the skills gap. Although India's top higher education institutions have AI majors, these programs have difficulty keeping up with the rapid development of artificial intelligence.
Similarly, companies can also launch reskilling programs to help employees prepare. It will be easily managed by us if we have a plan.
