How to modify code on Github

Apr 06, 2023 pm 12:49 PM

Github is currently the largest social platform for programmers in the world. It exists to facilitate communication and cooperation among programmers. On Github, programmers can co-create code libraries, share open source code, collaborate on development, and more. Modifying code is one of the most basic and important functions in Github. In this article, we will introduce how to modify code on Github.

1. Github Fork

The function of Github Fork is based on the branch function of Git, that is, copying one from other people's warehouses to your own account. After forking, the warehouse is owned by you and can be modified freely. This operation is called "derivation".

How to operate Fork? The steps are as follows:

1. Click Fork in someone else's warehouse to fork the warehouse to your own account.

2. Enter your account and you can see the warehouse you just forked.

3. Click to enter the warehouse and you can modify it at this time.

2. Github Clone

After Fork, we need to clone the code locally for modification. The steps are as follows:

1. Find the Clone or Download button in your repository, and click the link that appears (SSH or HTTPS are both acceptable, which depends on whether the public key is added to the Github repository).

2. Open the terminal and execute the following command: git clone [the link address just copied].

3. Wait until the download is completed.

3. Github Push

After completing the local modification, we need to push the modified content to Github for others to view and use.

1. Use git add to add the modified content to the Git cache.

2. Use the git commit command to submit the contents of the cache area to the local warehouse.

3. Use the git push command to push the contents of the local warehouse to your own Github warehouse.

4. Github Pull Request

After pushing the modifications to our own Github warehouse, we need to request the original warehouse to merge the changes we made. This process is called a Github Pull Request.

The steps are as follows:

1. Go to your Github warehouse, find Pull Requests, and click New pull request to create a merge request.

2. On the Create pull request page, select the branch you modified and the branch to be merged, and write the title and detailed description.

3. After submitting the merge request, wait for the original warehouse administrator to operate.

5. Github Merge

Finally, if the original warehouse administrator sees your merge request and feels that the changes you have made are good, you can perform the merge operation. This operation is called Github Merge, which means merging the modifications into the original repository.

The steps are as follows:

1. The administrator enters the Pull Requests of the original warehouse to view the merge request.

2. Check the request content and code, and agree to merge if there are no problems.

3. After the merge operation is completed, the new code has been merged into the original warehouse.

This is the complete process of modifying the code on Github. Of course, there are many details and special circumstances that need to be paid attention to in each step. I hope this article can help beginners master the basic use of Github and enable better code collaboration and sharing through Github.
