How to upload code to gitlab

Apr 06, 2023 pm 12:44 PM

Uploading code on GitLab is a very convenient and fast thing. It only takes a few simple steps to successfully upload the code. Next, let’s take a look at how to upload your code to GitLab.

The first step is to upload the code to the remote code repository through Git:

First, open the Git Bash terminal in your local code repository. Enter the following command to associate the code with the remote code repository on GitLab:

git remote add origin [remote repository URL]

where [remote repository URL] is the URL of GitLab's remote code repository.

Next, use the following command to push the local code to GitLab's remote code repository:

git push -u origin master

Here, we push the master branch of the local code to GitLab's remote code repository. If you are using another branch, please replace master with the name of your branch.

The second step is to create a project:

Creating a new project in GitLab is very simple. First, go to your dashboard page and click the New project button. In the new pop-up page, fill in the name and description of the new project, and then click the Create project button.

The third step is to create a branch:

In GitLab, a project can have multiple branches, each branch corresponding to different functions or fixing different bugs. After creating the new project, let's create some branches.

First, click on the Repository tab above the project page. Then, in the branches listed, click the Create branch button, enter the name of the new branch, and then click the Create branch button.

Step 4, submit the code:

Now that you have created the project and branch on GitLab, let's submit the code. In GitLab, the method of submitting code is similar to submitting code to other remote code repositories. As mentioned above, use Git Bash locally to associate the code with GitLab's remote code repository before committing it.

Next, use the following command to push the local code to the branch created on GitLab:

git push origin [branch name]

[branch name] here is the name of the branch you pushed.

The fifth step, merge branches:

In GitLab, code merging can be completed through the web interface. Open the project page and click the Merge request button. In the newly popped-up page, select the branch you want to merge, and then click the Submit merge request button.

Next, select a suitable merge strategy and click the Merge button.
