HomeCommon ProblemIf the PC suddenly loses power during use, will the information stored in the SRAM be lost?

If the power is suddenly cut off, the information stored in SRAM will be lost. SRAM refers to static random access memory, which is a type of random access memory; any information stored in RAM will be lost after a power outage. The information stored in SRAM can be retained for a long time without power outage and is in a stable state; when the power supply is stopped, the data stored in SRAM will disappear.

If the PC suddenly loses power during use, will the information stored in the SRAM be lost?

The operating environment of this tutorial: Windows 10 system, Dell G3 computer.

If the PC suddenly loses power during use, the information stored in the SRAM will be lost.

SRAM (Static Random Access Memory) is a type of random access memory (RAM); any information stored in RAM is lost when the power is turned off.

The so-called "static" means that as long as this kind of memory remains powered on, the data stored in it can be maintained constantly. In contrast, the data stored in dynamic random access memory (DRAM) needs to be updated periodically. However, when the power supply is stopped, the data stored in SRAM will still disappear (called volatile memory), which is different from ROM or flash memory that can still store data after a power outage.

The static storage unit is composed of a static flip-flop and an additional gate control. Therefore, it relies on the self-protection function of the trigger to store data. The information stored in SRAM can be retained for a long time without power outage, the state is stable, and no external refresh circuit is needed, thus simplifying the external circuit design. However, since the basic storage circuit of SRAM contains many transistors, its integration level is low and its power consumption is large.

The characteristics of SRAM are as follows:

  • Storage principle: Data is stored by flip-flops.

  • Unit structure: composed of six-tube NMOS or OS.

  • Advantages: fast, easy to use, no need to refresh, extremely low static power consumption; often used as Cache.

  • Disadvantages: large number of components, low integration, and high operating power consumption.

  • Commonly used SRAM integrated chips: 6116 (2K×8 bits), 6264 (8K×8 bits), 62256 (32K×8 bits), 2114 (1K×4 bits).
